4. To study and understand the cost and time saving benefits for individual home
builders.

3. Brief:
Study of Prefabrication Technologies Available for Emerging Housing Solutions in India
To study suitability of aspects such as Standardisation, modularization, and prefabrication in

Indian Context.
The housing sector this year is expected to be more badly hit than in 2020 due to spiralling
price of construction material, acute labour shortage and issues faced by buyers in availing
themselves of home loans. This makes the setting to explore alternatives and one such
avenue is offered by the prefabrication industry.

Topic 2: Study of Sub-regional characteristics Amongst Chettinad
Houses within the 74 villages of Chettinad
1. Aim
To study in detail the distinct differences within the broad
definitions of chettinad architecture by studying several houses from the 74
villages spread across 600 Sq. Miles in the region and classify them on
aspects of architectural planning, vocabulary and finishes.

3. Brief:
To study and understand if all houses across entire chettinad region are too similar or are
there subtle differences in terms of proportions, materials, work, workmanship depending on
the geographical locations of those houses from hamlet to hamlet.
It is also known that Chettinad Heritage is a part of UNESCO world heritage sites in the
region. Academicians can contribute by documenting these subtle differences to further
enhance the value of these existing reminders of heritage in the country.

(these 11 have been identified by UNESCO) and study the same on various parameters.

Topic 3: Study about feasibility of redevelopment of Housing
under the SMART CITIES programme.
1. Aim
To study in detail the redevelopment housing potential under
affordable housing sector category that represents convergence of area plans
with National and State level sectoral financial plans, for example the Atal
Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), Housing for
All, Swachh Bharat and Digital India.

3. Brief:
The Smart Cities Programme was launched in the year 2015. Sevral cities within Tamilnadu
have been identified viz. Chennai, Vellore, Salem, Madurai, Tirunelveli, Erode etc. There are
several assessment crieteria laid by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to be chosen to be
developed as SMART city
It is important to do a self assessment and rank the cities based on the Housing sector for
potential transformation into a Smart City candidate.
