Sample of Various Interventions

The implementation of a school counseling program will be designed to impact student

development in academic, career and social/emotional domains. The school counselor will

collaborate with teachers to teach lesson plans that correlate to the curriculum teachers are

working on and promoting the above domains. A sample lesson plan geared towards 1st grade

students in the Social Emotional Learning domain has kids learning responsibility for themselves

and their actions along with effective coping skills by creating a picture board with images that

inspire happiness. This lesson plan introduces the idea of self-care and understanding our

feelings.

Job Description

The job description of the school counselor would include: utilizing appropriate

counseling techniques, provide social-emotional and educational counseling, being a student

advocate, deliver classroom lessons as needed, supports the key role of the classroom teacher,

serves as a consultant and liaison to staff and parents, counsels individuals and small groups,

consults with parents/guardians and other family members on individual student needs, provide

Description of School
8
Comprehensive School Counseling Program Hallis

This comprehensive counseling program will take place at an elementary school where

Pre-K through 6th grade children attend. Enrollment of students fluctuate between 375 – 450

students. The demographics currently vary with 30% students being Native, 10% Asian, 2%

African-American, 8% Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander, 40% White, and 10% two or more

races.

Office Setup

Being the only school counselor in the elementary school, I would like to make the room

look as inviting as possible. I will set up my office with the desk near the back of the room and a

couple chairs in front of it for students to sit down. There will be a couple succulent plants on the

bookshelf or near the front of the door. There will be fidget toys around the desk or bookshelf for

kids to pick up and play with. I will have blank paper, markers, crayons, or colored pencils

accessible for students. Optional to have: an over the door basketball hoop with foam ball. These

items will help students feel comfortable when they come to the school counselor and be a segue

into play therapy if needed.

ASCA National Model Program

The four components of the ASCA National Model Program are: Foundation,

Management, Delivery, and Accountability. These components help guide professional School

Counselors in providing a comprehensive school counseling program. The Foundation

Component covers the mission/vision statement of the school and district as well as the domains

and competencies. The mission/vision statement will be reviewed yearly to ensure the school

counseling program is promoting and upholding this statement. Surveys on lesson plans

performed will be given to the teachers to provide feedback to the school counselor. This will be

data collected for the school counselor to review and ensure the appropriate standards were met

or see where improvements can be made.

In the Management Component, school counselors address the when and why the program

will be implemented. Using data, agreements, action plans, use-of-time forms, and calendars. A

School Counseling program is data driven and by collecting this data the school counselor can

adequately show principals, supervisors, and the district how the school counselor is essential to

ensure each student receives the best appropriate benefits and education. The Delivery

Component will address how a program will be implemented. Whether it be through Individual

Planning, Responsive Services, or System Support.

Lastly, the Accountability Component will determine if and how students are different

because of the school counseling program that was implemented. Reports will be reviewed, and a

School Counselor evaluation will be performed along with a program audit. An effective school

counseling program is based on data and results. School Counselors are leaders in systemic

change to ensure equity and access for all students all the while promoting academic, career and

personal/social development for each student (Rowland).
