Lesson Transcoding Information from Linear to
1 Non-linear Texts and Vice Versa

What’s In

Activity 1: My Timeline!

Before you start your journey in this module, try to make a timeline to plot and plan your
expected time to finish the different activities in this module. Copy the chart and make your own timeline.

https://squareheadteachers.files.wordpress.com/2013/08/timeline-simple-boxes.jpg

Have fun learning while accomplishing this module!

What’s New

Activity 2: Compare Me!

Now, read and examine the two types of text.

SET A

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a

new strain of coronavirus. This new virus and disease were unknown before the
outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.

10
On 30 January 2020, the Philippine Department of Health reported the first
case of COVID-19 in the country with a 38-year-old female Chinese national. On 7
March, the first local transmission of COVID-19 was confirmed. WHO is working
closely with the Department of Health in responding to the COVID-19 outbreak.

covid-19-response-in-the-philippines

SET B

https://files.pna.gov.ph/category-list/2020/05/14/ilo-may14dohgraph.jpg

Questions:

1. Between the two sets of examples, which would you prefer more in understanding
a text? Why?

2. What type of text is Set A? What about set B?

Did the previous activity help you? This part of the module will deepen
your learning about linear and non-linear texts.

Set A is an example of a linear text. What is a linear text?

And Set B is an example of a non-linear text. What is a non-linear text?

What made them different?

The key difference between linear and nonlinear text is their reading path. In a linear
text, a reader can make sense of the text by reading sequentially, from beginning

11
to the end. However, in a nonlinear text, the reading path is nonlinear and
nonsequential, thus, the reader can choose his own reading path.

Note: There will be times when you would have to transcode a linear text to non-
linear text to make it easier for other people to understand it and a non-linear text to
have a detailed description of a certain topic.

What It Is

Information can be transmitted not only through linear presentation, meaning

sentences and paragraphs, but also through the use of graphs, tables and charts.
Some people best understand ideas if presented through graphs or pictures while
others best understand written texts.

Here are some examples of a non-linear texts.

1. A graphic organizer is a visual display that demonstrates relationships between
facts, concepts or ideas. A graphic organizer guides the learner's thinking as they fill
in and build upon a visual map or diagram.

2. A flow chart is a graphical or symbolic representation of a process. Each step in the

process is represented by a different symbol and contains a short description of the
process step. The flow chart symbols are linked together with arrows showing the
process flow direction.

3. Venn diagram is a diagram used to identify the similarities and differences between
two or more concepts. It is represented by two overlapping circles.

4. Fish bone diagram identifies possible causes for an effect or problem.

5. Concept Maps are general organizers or textual aids that can show the central
thought with its matching characteristics. These are actually helpful and excellent for
brainstorming, refreshing stock knowledge, and/or generating alternative
expressions. This kind of map can also be used to show or rank the hierarchical
relationships as the most significant concept or concepts should be placed at the top.

6. Pie Graph is a circular chart which is divided into slices or portions to illustrate
proportion.

7. Line Graph is a common type of chart which displays the information as a series of
data points connected by line segments to show trends.

8.Timeline is a graphic representation of the passage of time.

12
9. Table is an arrangement of data in rows and columns, or possibly in a more
complex structure.

What I Can Do

Activity 8: Transcode Me!

Instruction. Transcode this linear text to nonlinear text.

Sharks and whales are a classic example of two different animals

revealing similar traits in the same environment. One of the similarities of these two
marine animals is their habitat. They both live in the vast range of depth in their
environment. They also have the same fine structure. They only have a single tail
for propulsion and because they are both large aquatic animals, they both
consume large volume of food, however, sharks hunt for their food. Whales do not
have this hunting tendency. Another difference of sharks to whales is their class.

18
Whales are mammals while sharks are fish but they both live in the ocean. Also,
whales have bones while sharks only have cartilages.

Instruction. Read the paragraph that follows. Carefully examine the data presented
in the paragraph and interpret it using an appropriate graphical presentation. After
which, in another blank sheet make a graphical presentation of your daily allowance
budget. Use colors to highlight parts /data in your presentation. You will be graded
according to the rubrics below.

On saving as a young teen, Riz does not enjoy as much as other

teenagers would. Her weekends are spent on looking for work so she can
earn her allowance. She spends two hundred pesos a week. One hundred
pesos for her lunch, eighty pesos for her fare and twenty pesos for her
classroom dues. She earns more than what she needs for the week. On
Saturdays, her routine would be to go to a distant relative and wash clothes
for a small earning of one hundred pesos. In the afternoon, she volunteers
weeding at a neighbor’s garden for an hour and gratefully receives fifty pesos
for the work extended. On Sunday after church, she would iron out her
teacher’s uniform for a fee of one hundred pesos. Despite her weekend
routine, she remains to be one of the smartest in class.
