What It Is

Sometimes when you are reading, it is hard to figure out what you’re reading is
all about. One method of narrowing down the purpose of a text is by identifying the
main idea and supporting details. So how do we do this in just three easy steps?

First, identify the topic. Topic is a person, place, thing or idea that is being
written about and is usually one to two words which serve as the main focus. Then,
you identify the main idea. This will be a full sentence and it will state what

7
specifically the author wants to tell you about the topic. It is the most important
thought about the topic. Lastly, list down the supporting details. These are
sentences that provide information, facts, or pieces of evidence that explain, define,
or prove the main idea.

Read the text below and let’s try to identify the topic, main idea and the
Protecting the rainforest is very important.

grow in the rainforest. Most species that live on
land make their homes there. The rainforest also
helps to keep our air clean.

supporting details.

 Topic: Rainforest
 Main Idea: Protecting the rainforest is very important.
 Supporting Details:
1. Many life-saving medicines come from plants that grow in the rainforest.
2. Most species that live on land make their homes there.
3. The rainforest also helps to keep our air clean.

One way to identify the topic is to take a look on the word or point which is being
repeated in the text. The main idea can be found in the beginning, middle, or end of
a paragraph. The remaining sentences will serve as the supporting details as long
as it explains, defines, describes, or proves the main idea.

Now it’s your turn.

Activity 4: Support the Main Idea

Instructions: Read the short paragraph below the identify the topic, the main
idea, and the supporting details.

Some people think your handwriting tells

something about you. They say that up-and-down
writing shows a calm, logical person. Is that you?
Writing that slants a little to the right means someone is
outgoing. If writing slants a lot to the right, that person is
very friendly. What about writing that slants to the left?
Someone who writes this way is rather quiet.

Flor and Liza chatted and sang cheerfully as they strolled in the park.
Suddenly a big scary dog appeared. Liza quickly climbed a tree. Flor wanted to
help but her friend had already left her. She was very scared because the dog
seemed to be a rabid one and could easily bite and infect her. When the dog came
near to her, she laid very still on the ground and controlled her breath. The dog
came close to her, sniffed her body all over but the rabid dog just walked away
thinking that the lady was dead. Liza climbed down from the tree when she had
known the dog was gone. She asked scornfully, “What did the dog tell you?” then
Flor thought for a while. “The dog told me never to trust a friend who escapes and
leaves you alone when you need her most,” she answered. Then Liza realized her
mistake and felt sorry to her friend.
