Basics of Series - In this chapter a series

of numbers or letters are given, in which
they are arranged under a particular rule.
These series are formed in many ways
and different rules work in them.
Additionally, sometimes one of the terms
in this series is given incorrectly and it is
necessary to find out which term is
incorrect in the given question

TYPE - I (BASED ON)-

Addition/
Subtraction/ Multiplication/ Division/
Addition and multiplication/ Addition and Division/
Subtraction and Division/ perfect square/
Perfect cube/
Prime numbers/

Ex - 1
5, 11, 1 9, 29, ? , 55, 71
Sol:
(here, series is based on Addition, i.e +6,
+8, +10, +12, +14, +16)
5+6 = 11
11+8 = 1 9
19+10 = 29
29+12 = 41
41+14 = 55
It means ? = 41

Ex - 2
84, 81,76, 69, ?, 49, 36
Sol:
((here, series is based on subtraction, i.e,
-3, -5, -7, -9, -11, -13,)
84-3 = 81
81-5 = 76
76-7 = 69
69-9 = 60
60-11 = 4 9
49-13 = 36
It means ? = 60

Ex - 3
5, 1 5, 4 5, 1 35, ?, 1215, 3645
Sol:
((here, series is based on multiplication,
i.e- e very d igit is multiplied by 3)
5×3=15
15 × 3 = 4 5
4 5 × 3 = 1 35
135 × 3 = 4 05
405 × 3 = 1 215
1215 × 3 = 3645
It m eans, ? = 405
Ex - 4
7500, 1 500, 300, ?, 12
Sol:
((here, series is based on division, i.e
every number is divided by 5 then that
number i s the next)
7500 ÷ 5 = 1500
1500 ÷ 5 = 300
300 ÷ 5 = 6 0
60 ÷ 5 = 1 2
It m eans, ? = 60

Ex- 5
6, 1 3, 2 7, 5 5, ?, 223, 447
Sol:
(Here is the series based on addition and
multiplication. i.e,
Every number is multiplied by 2 and
added b y 1 )
6 × 2 + 1 = 13
13 × 2 + 1 = 27
27 × 2 + 1 = 55
55 × 2 + 1 = 111
111 × 2 + 1 = 223
223 × 2 + 1 = 447
It m eans, ? = 111

Ex - 6
10, 1 9, 3 7, 73, ?, 289, 577
Sol:
(Here is the series based on subtraction
and multiplication, i.e every number is
multiplied b y 2 and subtracted by 1)
10 × 2 − 1 = 19
19 × 2 − 1 = 37
37 × 2 − 1 = 73
73 × 2 − 1 = 145
145 × 2 − 1 = 289
289 × 2 − 1 = 577

Ex- 7
1808, 452, 448, 212, ?, 52, 48, 12, 8
Sol:
(Here, series is based on subtraction and
division, i.e every number is divided by 4
and then subtracted by 4)
1808 ÷ 4 = 452
452 - 4 = 448
448 ÷ 4 = 212
212 - 4 = 208
208 ÷ 4 = 52
52 - 4 = 48
48 ÷ 4 = 12
12- 4 = 8
It means, ? = 208

Ex - 8
12, 21, 37, 62, 98, 147, ?
Sol :
(Here, series is based on perfect square,
i.e every number is added by 32 , 42 , 52 ,
62 , 82 ,...)
12 + 32 = 21
21 + 42 = 37
37 + 52 = 62
62 + 62 = 98
98 + 72 = 147
147 + 82 = 211
It means, ? = 211

13, 14, 22, 49, 113, ?, 454, 797

(Here, the series is based on perfect cube,
i.e, every number is added by 13 , 23 , 33
, 43, 53 , 63 , 73 respectively)
13+ 13 = 14
14+ 23 = 22
22+ 33 = 49
49+ 43 = 113
113+ 53 = 238
238+ 63 = 454
454+ 73 = 797
It means, ? = 238

TYPE - IV (Based on continuous

pattern s eries)
Ex - 1
mn_p_nop_no_m_op
Sol:
Here, s eries is mnop/mnop/mnop/mnop
So, a nswer is ommpn
Ex- 2
abc_a_bcc_a_cc_ bcca
Sol:
Here s eries is
abcca/abcca/abcca/abcca
So, a nswer is caabaa

TYPE - I I (Based on wrong t erm)

3, 6, 9, 24, 48, 96, 192, 384
Sol: Here, every number is multiplied by
2 b y the previous number.
3×2=6
6 × 2 = 12
12 × 2 = 2 4
24 × 2 = 4 8
48 × 2 = 9 6
96 × 2 = 1 92
192 × 2 = 384
Here, replace 9 with 12
So, w rong term is 9.
Ex - 2
12, 19, 28, 33, 40, 47, 54
Sol: Here, every number i s a dded b y 7
12+7 = 19
19+7 = 26
26+7 = 33
33+7 = 40
40+7 = 47
47+7 = 54
Here, replace 28 with 26.
So, 2 8 is wrong term.

TYPE - III (Based on Alphabetical

series)
UVW, ZAB, EFG, JKL, OPQ, ?
Sol :
Here,
UVW = U+5, V+5, W+5 = ZAB
ZAB = Z+5, A+5, B+5 = E FG
EFG = E+5, F+5, G+5 = JKL
JKL = J+5, K+5, L+5 = OPQ
OPQ = O+5, P+5 , Q+5 = T UV
So, ? = TUV
