Conversation and Academic Writing

Section B - Periods 2 and 3 - Fall 2023

Description

● This is a conversation and writing course for teachers that already master the
language at a solid B2+ level and need practice to develop fluency in their
speaking and proficiency in their writing practice.

● The content of this course will be covered in 30 hours during the semester and
it will be conducted in the following manner:

Calendar

Semester: Fall 2023

○ Period 2: weeks 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 (15 hours)


■ Start: Monday, September 18, 2023
■ 5 weeks - 3 hours per week (2 sessions of 1.5 hours each)
■ Schedule: To be confirmed by your Regional Director

○ Week 12 (Semana Tec) No classes (October 23-27, 2023)

○ Period 3: weeks 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 (15 hours)


■ 5 weeks - 3 hours per week (2 sessions of 1.5 hours each)
■ Schedule: To be confirmed by your Regional Director
■ End: Friday, December 1, 2023
Format

Virtual (Zoom link provided by CEDDIE)

Objective

The participants will consolidate the communicative productive skills in English .i.e.
speaking and writing through practice of different real situations and the
development of different writing genres.

Requirement

● The course requires prior knowledge of the English language at a B2+ level
through a valid certification accepted by the Tec de Monterrey.

Methodology

The basis of this course’s methodology is communication. The main objective is that
the enrolled professors are able to use the acquired knowledge in an appropriate
way. At this level, the student is regarded as the center of the teaching process,
which emphasizes interaction as the means and ultimate goal.

Priorities are established according to the communicative goals of the enrolled


professors and their linguistic skills: reading, listening, writing and speaking. The
participants develop integrated skills through using authentic readings and listening
materials to produce creative speeches and documents.

This course is adapted to the established levels of the Common European


Framework of Reference for Languages and the Educational Model Tec21.

Unit 7: Water, Water, Everywhere?

Longman Academic Writing Series 5:

Chapter 1: Narrowing thesis statements, choosing topic sentences, describing a


strong conclusion, identifying an appropriate topic, organizing ideas in an outline,

Chapter 2: Introductory paragraphs: establishing criteria for a classification,


establishing unity, achieving transitions with coherence,

Chapter 3: Organizing a process essay (Introduction, body and concluding
paragraphs), identifying run-on and comma-spliced sentences, revising choppy
and stringy sentences, using transitions signals, summarizing an article in a
one-paragraph abstract

Chapter 4: Identifying causes and effects (including transitions signals), punctuating


and capitalizing quotations

Outcomes

Use the topics suggested to complete the course. The topics can be applied to both
writing and speaking activities in addition to the material that is listed in the books.

Activities to be produced by participants as part of their portfolio evidence:

● Argumentative and persuasive speeches


● Informative presentations
● Essays

Evaluation

Rubrics must be developed for (some of the) writing and speaking tasks. Participants
will give a final oral presentation with a previous document of the script.

Total 100 %
* A minimum of 80% of attendance is mandatory to accredit this course.
