1. (10 marks) A can of parts for a construction toy was found in the attic.

The parts were either red or blue, long or short, heavy or thin, and were
made either of wood or plastic. There were no parts that were either red
and heavy, or that were blue, short and made of wood. It was found that
54 parts were made of wood; 13 were short and made of wood; six were
blue, thin, long and made of wood; 11 were red, thin, short and made of
plastic; 27 were thin and made of wood; 18 were blue, thin and made of
plastic; 36 were blue and heavy; and 27 were red and long.
(a) Complete a tree diagram for the problem.
(b) How many parts were there in the can?
(c) A part is chosen at random. What is the probability it is a red part?
(d) If the chosen part is red, what is the probability it is not made out
of wood?
(e) Ten parts are being chosen and then placed back in the can, one by
one. Find the probability that 7 of them were red and not made out
of wood.
2. (6 marks) An airline has ordered three dierent planes: B737, DC9 and
AB310. The airline has ve approved colors and plans to use two of them
on the exterior of each plane.
(a) In how many ways can this be done if there are no further restrictions?
(b) In how many ways can this be done if no two planes are to have the
same pair of colors?
(c) In how many ways can this be done if the DC9 and B737 planes must
have completely dierent colors?
3. (3 marks)

(a) How many dierent seven letter words can be made by arranging the
letters of the word novella?
(b) How many dierent ve letter words can be made by arranging the
seven letters of the word novella and then removing the last two
letters?
4. (8 marks) A rst bag contains ve blue balls and a second bag contains
ve green balls and two blue balls. Zelda and her brother Charlie each
select a dierent bag and draw a ball at random from the selected bag.
(a) What is the probability that neither of them choose a green ball?
(b) What is the probability that Zelda chooses a blue ball?
(c) What is the probability that Zelda chose the rst bag if she got a blue
ball?

1
(d) Zelda did get a blue ball. She put the ball back into the bag from which
she took it and drew a ball at random from the same bag. What is the
probability that this ball is blue?
5. (4 marks) A box contains 4 red and 4 black balls. 5 box are selected from
the box without replacement. Which of the following sets could be used
as a sample space for this experiment? Which of the sample spaces are
equiprobable?
(i) one red, two red, three red, four red,
(ii) more black than red, more red than black,
(iii) at least one red, at least one black
6. (4 marks) A student must take a multiple choice test of 30 questions where
each question has four choices for the answer. The probability that they
know the correct answer to any one question is 50%. If they don't know
the correct answer, then they choose one of the answers at random. Find
the probability that they get at least 27 of the questions correct.
