EXPERIMENT NO 3

OBJECTIVE
To study the characteristics of belt drive mechanism
APPARATUS
Belt and Pulley drive apparatus, Vernier Calipers

THEORY
Belt and pulley drive mechanism is mostly use to pull heavy machinery and The belt
drive mechanism is a rotation transmitting mechanism for transmission of rotational
drive force. The belt drive mechanism includes, for example, a drive pulley, a driven
pulley, and an endless belt wound between the drive pulley and the driven pulley. It is
known that the belt of the belt drive mechanism is made from a metal material having
high rigidity.Belt, usually made of fibrous material with high coefficient of friction, is
either flat or has V-shaped cross section and pulley is usually made of Cast Iron. V-
belt is mostly used in high speed drives because of its greater contact area with the
pulley groove
EXPERIMENT PROCEDURE
1 Measure the diameter of all steps of driver and driven pulleys and records

2 Set the belt between the corresponding steps of both pulleys

3 By moving the handle attached with the driver pulley mark reference positions on
driver as well as driven pulleys.

4 Give suitable number of turns to the driver pulley and note the corresponding
number of turns moved by the driven pulley.

5 Rotate the driver pulley with a particular angular speed and record the
corresponding angular speed of the driven pulley.

6 Repeat the experiment for various pulley combinations and angular speeds.

7 Make calculations and plot graphs of the diameter ratios against angular
displacement and angular speed ratios and show the results on the same graph.

COMMENTS
Belt and pulley are very use full mechanism to pull high weight in this mechanism we
study the behaviour of belt and pulley and both graph show the smooth behaviour
diameter to angular and diameter to angular speed show in the above graph
