WHY USE DECODABLES?
Recent brain research gathered
from a variety of fields (psychology,
special education, etc.) is coming
together to show us exactly what
needs to happen in order for
students to become truly proficient
at reading. This convergence of
research and ideas is being termed
the science of reading. The
science of reading calls for
systematic and explicit instruction
of the seven building blocks of literacy: oral language, phonemic
awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and
writing. When teaching phonics, specifically, students need A LOT of
targeted and correct practice for a phonics skill to be internalized.
Decodable readers have mostly decodable words (words that are
easily segmented, blended, and “follow the rules”), a few mostly
familiar sight words, and an occasional rule-breaker/vocabulary
word that helps with plot and interest. After learning a phonics skill
students can
immediately apply it
to a text and are
therefore much more
likely to internalize the
skill and apply it in
their future reading.
I have done my very
best to make these
decodable readers
targeted, quality,
and of interest to
little readers. I hope
you just love them!
Happy Teaching!
