I. OBJECTIVES
A. Describe the characteristics of vertebrates and invertebrates. (S6MT-IIe-f-3)
B. Express through drawing the distinguishing characteristics of vertebrates and
invertebrates.
C. Care about the animals and other living things.

II. SUBJECT MATTER


A. Content/Topic: Vertebrates and Invertebrates
B. References: DLP in Science 6 Q2-W5-D1, Youtube
C. Materials: Pictures, Videoclip thru Powerpoint Presentation

III. PROCEDURE
A. Engage
The teacher will show/post pictures of different animals and let the pupils identify/
give the name of each. (The animals posted are classified as group A and B)
B. Explore
The teacher will ask the pupils:
What can you notice about the animals in Group A? Describe.
What can you notice about the animals in Group B? Describe.
C. Explain
The teacher will tell the pupils:
“The animals in Group A are called Vertebrates and their common characteristic is
the presence of backbone. While the animals in Group B do not have a backbone
and they are called Invertebrates.”
Presentation of video clip about Vertebrates and Invertebrates

Guide questions:
-What are the two groups of animals?
-How do you classify the animals?
-What do you call to the animals with backbone? Animals without backbone?
-What other animals can you identify with backbones and without backbones?
D. Elaborate
Activity
The teacher will post pictures of animals, then let the pupils will identify if it is
Vertebrates or Invertebrates.
Group Activity – Classifying Vertebrates and Invertebrates

Group 1 – Task: Cut, sort and glue the pictures in their appropriate group:
Vertebrates or Invertebrates
Group 2 – Task: Write the name of each animal in the correct column: Vertebrates or
Invertebrates
Group 3 – Task: Answer the crossword puzzle then group the animals into
Vertebrates and Invertebrates
Group 4 – Put the terms/words in their appropriate group to classify Vertebrates and
Invertebrates

E. Evaluate
Ask the pupils:
- What are the two classifications of animals?
- What is the common characteristic of Vertebrates? Invertebrates?
- What are you going to do if you find an eagle with broken/injured wings? Why?
- What are you going to do if you see a sea turtle walking in along the road? Why?

A. Describe the following animals as vertebrate and invertebrate. Write V if it is


vertebrate, IV if it is invertebrate.
