Part-I Part-II Part-III Final Exam Continuous Total

Explanatory Choice Workout (50%) Assessment (100%)
(26 points) (6 points) (18 points) (50%)
Part I: Explanatory Type Questions (26 pts)
1. Discuss the causes of ratio and phase angle errors in CTs. How can these errors be minimized? (5 pts)

2. What is meant by ‘burden’ and ‘composite error’ of a CT? (5 pts)

3. Describe the characteristics of the Rogowski coil current sensor.? (5 pts)

4. What is the advantage and disadvantage of CCVT? (5 pts)

5. Explain about attraction type electromagnetic relays? (6 pts)

Part II: Multiple Choice Questions (6 pts)

1. Which one of relay is that operates when the phasor difference of two or more similar electrical quantities
exceeds a pre-determined value.?
(a) Differential relay (b) Over current relay
(c) Distance relay (d) Directional relay
2. The material mostly preferred as core of protective CTs is
(a) nickel–iron (b) hot-rolled non-oriented silicon steel
(c) cold-rolled oriented silicon steel (d) none of the above
3. The burden of an overcurrent relay is helpful in deciding
(a) transformation ratio of a CT (b) volt–ampere rating of a CT
(c) transformation ratio of a PT (d) volt–ampere rating of a PT
Part III: Workout Questions (18 pts)
1. Determine the possible local and remote back-up protection for a fault location as shown in the Figure
below? Assume that breaker I, breaker L and breaker M failed to operate. (8 pts)
2. A small power plant consists of three 5 MVA, 6.6 kV, 3-phase, 50 Hz alternators with 20% reactance,
each connected to a common busbar. The busbar supplies a number of feeders, on each of which are
installed CTs with details as follows:

CT ratio = 600/5 A
CT secondary resistance = 0.8 ohm
Burden impedance = 1.2 ohms
Neglecting the lead burden and assuming that no generating source exists at the far ends of the feeders,
specify (10 pts)

(a) the secondary voltage up to which the CTs should not saturate (knee-point voltage)
(b) accuracy limit factor and accuracy class
(c) rated burden of the CT

3. An induction motor is to be protected against overload. Nameplate details are 3-phase, 6.6 kV, 1250 kW,
0.8 p.f. The motor can withstand 15% overload continuously. A thermal relay is connected across a C.T.
of 200/1 ratio. The time constant of the relay is also 10 minutes. The range of settings is 70 –130% of 1 A
in steps of 5%. Determine (Bonus)
(a) The relay current setting in %
(b) The relay Plug setting multiplier if the fault current is 1571.82 A
(c) The operating time of relay if the time setting multiplier is 0.05 and the following graph is
Time/PSM curve
UTP CAT 6 Single strand (8 x 23/24 AWG) PVC Insulated Tinned copper cable with maximum of 100 ± 15% Ω impedance
