Physics 42S: Advanced Placement Physics 1 - Course Outline

Instructor: Mr. Colonval

Welcome to Physics 42S! This is a university level physics course that primarily will deal with
mechanics. Students who complete this course will have the option of completing an AP exam for
possible credit in University.

This course will move extremely quickly. It is assumed that students will be completing problems
outside of class time and, occasionally, will be studying additional material out of class time that we
haven’t already covered in class. It is assumed that you have already covered the topics from
physics 30S. We have approximately 18 weeks to cover the remaining topics for the course and to
prepare you for the exam. The topics that we will attempt to cover this semester are:

Textbook sections
Weeks 1 & 2 - Physics 30S revisited 1.1 – 1.8
2.1-2.8
3.1 – 3.8
4.1 – 4.9
5.1 – 5.3
Week 3 & 4 - Work and Energy, Power 6.1 – 6.10
Week 5 & 6 - Linear Momentum 7.1 – 7.7
Weeks 7 & 8 - Universal Gravitation, Torque and Center of Mass 5.4 - 5.
10
7.8 – 7.10
Weeks 9 & 10 - Angular Kinematics 8.1 – 8.3
Week 11 & 12 - Angular Momentum 8.4 – 8.9

Weeks 13 & 14 - Simple Harmonic Motion 11.1-11.6

***Please note that this outline is a guide. Occasionally we may find ourselves moving faster or
slower through the material.

In general, your mark will be calculated as follows:

% of Term Mark % of Final Mark

Tests 60% 50%
Labs 10% 10%
Projects 10% 10%
Midterm Exam 20%
Exam 30%

All tests will carry equal weight in your final mark. All projects, labs and tests must be written in
order to be considered for credit in the course.
