Engage: 15 mins
1. To introduce the lesson, students will be asked if they ever had a

disagreement or conflict with a family member. Encourage brief sharing

of experiences. A brief overview of the novel, "My Father Sun-Sun

Johnson," its author, and the setting of the story will be shared with the

students.

Explore: 10 mins

Students will be instructed to read chapter one. Each student will get a chance to

read the story out loud in the class. While reading, literary devices will be

highlighted.

Explain: 15 mins

1. A discussion will be held with the students about the literary devices

used in chapter one.

2. The students will be given notes which they will read, and any

misconception identified by the students will be rectified.

Elaborate: 10 mins

The students will be instructed to identify the setting in chapter one. The

students will describe the setting.

Evaluation: 10 mins

The students will be instructed to write two paragraph about chapter 1.

Chapter 1. The focus will be on Sun-Sun Johnson, his family members, and any
notable relationships.

1. Who are the main characters introduced in this chapter?
2. What is the relationship between Sun-Sun Johnson and his family
members?
3. Are there any conflicts or tensions presented in this chapter?
4. What are the themes highlighted in this chapter?

Based on what was discussed the students will be given notes on each character
and theme.

Elaborate: 10 mins

The students will be instructed to describe the narrator of the text.

The students will be given a table to compare the characters.


Content: This is the tale of Merton Sun-Sun Johnson, told from the first person

perspective of Rami Johnson, his son. We learn that Sun-Sun Johnson was a

wealthy individual who did not manage his money well. As a result, he lost his

home and family, with the exception of Rami, to his business rival Jake

Hibbertson. He moved to River Bottom, with his son Rami, where he embarked

on a new business venture, and slowly starting the process of rebuilding his life.

He manages to carve out an interesting life with his new neighbours, despite

still making poor business decisions. However, Sun-Sun shows himself to be a

brave hero at the end of the book when he sacrifices his life for Jake’s.
