The Importance Of Maritime Rights In America
In the early eighteen hundreds France and Britain were at war. The Napoleonic powers
were starting to gain more sway in Europe, and Britain was trying to control America as
much as it could. Relations were beginning to strain, and America felt that its rights had
been violated by Great Britain. The main factors that drove the United Statesto war with
Great Britain were the protection of maritime rights, the drive to expand American soil,
and the wish to portray America as an honorable nation. The main component which
drove the US to war was the need to prove America was a great nation capable of
protecting their rights, their people, and their honor.
The main factor, that being the verification of America as a great nation, encompassed
most of the others, including the need to protect United States maritime rights. During
this time of conflict leading up to the war British forces would capture American ships
and then take many sailors as prisoners, this practice was called impressment. The
United States Committee on Foreign Relations claimed that the nation s maritime rights
were being infringed and in a congressional report informed the people that Great
Britain, in defiance of this incontestable [clear and certain] right, captures every
American vessel ... enslaves our seamen, and in spite of our [complaints and protests]
perseveres in these aggressions (Document 1). President Madison also tried to emphasise
the nature of Britain s actions in his declaration of war. We
Comparing Hamlet And Oedipus The King
An Analysis of the Avoidable Fates of Oedipus and Hamlet

Hamlet and Oedipus Rex are two epic dramas written by William Shakespeare and
Sophocles respectively. Through these stories, Shakespeare and Sophocles tell the tales
of two tragic heroes with numerous similarities. Hamlet and Oedipus are brave,
courageous and noble heroes who met unfortunate and catastrophic fates. Hamlet met his
demise in an attempt to avenge his father s brutal murder and humiliation; Oedipus
willingly falls from glory as he tries to redeem himself from his mistakes. Although many
agree that neither hero deserved his fate, upon analyzing the plots of the two epic
dramas, one is forced conclude that Hamlet s and Oedipus actions were rash and
unnecessary, and that they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

When the King and Queen appear to be greatly disturbed by the play, Hamlet decides that
the two are guilty, and that he must kill Claudius and torment Gertrude with guilt. Today,
almost anyone would agree that one s facial expressions upon watching a play would not
provide sufficient evidence to incriminate someone; however, Hamlet irrationally bases
his decision to kill his uncle and traumatize his mother upon this evidence . Ultimately, it
is this irrational thinking that leads to the deaths of multiple characters, including his
own. While Shakespeare emphasizes the importance of rational thinking through, Hamlet
s death, Sophocles also explores this topic through Oedipus Rex. Like Hamlet, Oedipus
too reaches his demise as a result of rash thinking. The play begins with the citizens of
Thebes begging Oedipus to save them from the plague that has killed many. When Creon
brings the news that the Oracle at Delphi claimed that Gods cursed the city of Thebes
with the plague due to the unavenged murder of the Old King Laius, Oedipus is quick to
proclaim the following,
I solemnly forbid the people of this country,
Where power and throne are mine, ever to receive that
College Costs Are Out Of Control Essay
People with college degrees are paid 80% more than people with only a high school
education. When the college degree is from a more prestigious school, that percentage
increases even further (McArdle). Even President Barack Obama acknowledged this in a
2012 speech, saying that The incomes of folks with a collegedegree are twice as high as
those who don t have a high school diploma (Lemann). While a college educationis a
good investment for the long run, the cost of college is not a positive. The price of
goods has risen due to inflation over the past decade, but during that time college
increased drastically. The rates have nearly doubled, but the things that students learn still
remain the same. If students are paying so much more... Show more content on

The plan will help the state to reach its goal of helping 60 percent of Idahoans between
the ages of 25 and 34 complete a degree or certificate by 2020 (Mills). In addition, half
the United States already has, or is in the midst, of making statewide education systems
that include college (Kingsley and Vance). Not only is college becoming more common,
but it would make sense that with more students coming into college that the rates would
be lower. However, colleges are not decreasing costs, but instead increasing them, making
tuition costs harder on students. The job market is evolving, causing college to be
essential to anyone that wants to pursue a job. In a 2012 speech, President Barack
Obama said that right now, the unemployment rate for Americans with a college degree
or more is about half the national average (Lemann). This shows that even with a college
degree, the job market is changing, causing many students to be unemployed.Yet at the
same time, people that have a college education are better off than those without one.
Moreover, the current job market is becoming more information based, which requires
more literacy, math skills and critical thinking. Since the United States is not fully
prepared with an education system that only requires kindergarten through 12th grade,
the United States must outsource jobs overseas to have necessary tasks be completed.
