NELL: The Woman Who Hardly Speaks English

The movie “Nell” demonstrates how a wild or “feral” Child would appear like. It shows that an
Individual have lived isolated from society and had less contact with humans. With Nell’s case,
she and her single mother lived in a concealed cabin in the woods, with her mother passing she
has no one left could teach how to communicate and the results of her being a feral child. The
movie progress with Dr Jerry Lovell encounters her hanged up in the cabin, frightened. The she
speak to her at first was angry and annoyed, as the story progresses, Dr. Jerry understands
what she is saying. Before that happened Dr. Jerry need help with Dr. Paula Olsen, who is a
researcher focuses on autistic children. By the way she acts and behave, she was thought to be
an individual with autism, but she only lacks human communication and cannot form a single
sentence. But there are words she can speak out like “Lord” because her mother was Christian,
and “Way” like ‘the Lord shows the way. With Dr Jerry kept interacting with Nell, as the sun and
moon went by, He can fully understand what she says. It was difficult at first to understand even
with subtitles on, with her body language like pointing and showing diversity of objects in her
cabin, Nell’s communication is understandable. It is like a child who is learning how to speak,
barely and can only point out a specific object that a child can remember. It is similar Nell’s case
since she is surrounded by nature and her home cabin in the woods.
Nell’s language she speaks is English in a gibberish way. Stating because the way she
communicates with Dr. Jerry and the way she is living in her cabin. The teaching methods
shown in the movie to understand Nell to (re) learn was the environments she was been to and
with the aid of Dr. Jerry. It is difficult to (re) learn a language when you started. In the movie, it
shows that Nell is having difficult learning to speak her language due to her nature not
surrounded by society and only by herself. With the help of Dr Jerry and Paula, she gradually
(re) learned her language and she fully speak now at the end of the movie as she stated, “I
remember that.” And it shows that feral child even in their late age can (re) learn their own
language.
It is truly possible to (re) learn a language you originated; it is difficult at first due to the nature of
the feral child. Once you have interacted with the child it will become neutral, and it will
gradually (re) learn the language once he/she has become friendly to the individual who will aid
to (re) learn the language. It is real, no doubt, despite it is from a movie, it can be helpful and
can be useful to feral children who have difficulty to (re) learn the language you originated.
