5. Transport instructions
The grab must be transported in the correct position of its unstable form when it is in
its closed stand.

• Check the lift capacity of the accessories which are used to move the grab. The
weight of the grab can be found on a plate attached to the grab.
• Preferably transport the grab in its opened position. If it is too large, transport the
grab on its side, see figure 2 for example.
• Be sure to seal off the hydraulic system before lifting the grab.
• Use the appropriate binders and/or rope to secure the grab.

6. Mounting instructions
Changes to the grab may only be carried-out by personnel approved by
J&B Grabs B.V.

1. The crane’s hydraulic system must be compatible with that of the grab and (where used)
the rotator. If the original crane is not compatible, then the hydraulic system must be
changed to suit. This work may only be carried-out by crane manufacturer-
authorised personnel.
2. Use only J&B Grabs B.V. or the crane manufacturer’s recommended couplings.
3. If the crane manufacturer delivers the coupling, then the crane manufacturer’s instructions
must be followed.
4. Ensure that the couplings are suitable for the system before mounting, and that the hoses
are of the correct length to prevent them being torn off.
5. Place the grab on a level floor in a stable opened position. Ensure that the tines are
resting fully on their stops.
6. Take the crane-jib together with the grab & crane connector-plate. Set the hole from the
connector-plate next to the hole from the crane-jib. Never use hands to feel if the holes
are aligned. Insert the connecting-pin and fix it in place.
7. Check that the pin between the grab and the connecting-plate is firmly fixed in place.
8. Grease points “A” (fig.2) with Pennzoil multipurpose 303 or equivalent grease. Use special
grease for underwater purposes.
9. Clean the hydraulic couplings before connecting, dirt in the system can lead to
internal damage! If dirt is found in the system, stop immediately and check for damage.
Any damage must be immediately rectified.
10.Connect the grab to the crane hydraulics.
11.The grab’s hydraulic system is filled with oil. It is possible that the system may have to be
bled, the following steps must then be followed; *Open and close the grab three times,(do
not use full pressure), this should ensure that any air in the system will rise to the top of
the cylinders. *Place the grab on the floor in a closed and stable position. Screw the
uppermost cylinder coupling slightly open. Watch out! The crane can move due to the
drop in pressure. As soon as oil instead of air appears, screw the coupling closed.
12.Check if the oil-pressure is the same, or less than the given oil-pressure figures.(See
chapter- Technical information).
13.If it is not possible to regulate the pressure within the given limits, contact the crane
supplier.
14.Now carryout the Opening/closing Test to check that the grab movements correspond to
the crane controls. Switchover the hose connections if necessary.
Check for correct type of connector-plate by observing if the grab can swing both parallel
and perpendicular to the crane jib.

J & B G R I J P E R S B . V .

7. Detaching the grab from the crane

1. Place the grab in an opened position on a level floor. The tines must rest on
their stops.
2. Ensure that the crane controls are set to zero.
3. Depressurise the hydraulic system.
4. Detach the four high-pressure hoses connecting the crane to the grab.
5. Place the closure plugs to prevent the grab from closing.
6. Ensure that the connector cannot topple over, then disconnect the connector.

• By prolonged stoppage, grease all nipples periodically.

8. User instructions
Warnings and tips

• The grab should only be used by qualified personnel.

Personnel should be aware of:
1. The nominal load of the grab,
2. De limitations of the grab,
3. The safety standards for lifting.
• It is absolutely forbidden to use the grab before all personnel in the working
area of the grab are evacuated. If necessary, secure the site and use every
measurement to ensure a safe working area.
• Use the grab only for lifting material which is described in the chapter
“Description of the grab”.
• It is forbidden to leave the crane if there is a load in the grab.
• The grab should always be visible to the crane-driver. If not take steps to make it
so.
• All safety standards specified for the crane also apply to the grab. If they differ the
strictest should be applied.
• If the crane is modified to suit the grab, ask for instructions for the controls from
those who carried-out the modifications.
• Lift and transport the load only if it is secure in the grab.
• It is forbidden to lift the load with a weight above the maximum lifting capacity of
the grab.
• Lift the grab slightly to inspect its stability, then lift it to the minimum height
necessary to go over obstacles.
• Prevent the load from swinging.
• It is forbidden to rotate the grab by striking against constructions or materials.
• It is absolutely forbidden to use the grab for demolition or dragging of any object.
The grab is made for vertical loads only.
• The crane controls the grab, refer to the instructions in the crane manual. It is
strictly forbidden to lock the controls in a position other than stop.

10  30-11-2016
J & B G R I J P E R S B . V .

9. Normal maintenance
THE GRAB MUST BE PLACED ON A STABLE SURFACE BEFORE ANY
MAINTENANCE IS CARRIED OUT. ENSURE THAT THE TINES ARE RESTING
ON THEIR STOPS AND THAT THE CRANE’S ENGINE IS SWITCHED OFF.

ATTENTION:

IF THE GRAB IS DAMAGED, ASK IMMEDIATELY FOR QUALIFIED PERSONNEL,

CONTINUING COULD MAKE THE GRAB DANGEROUS.

Regular maintenance, like greasing and checking the grab, lengthen the
life of the grab and therefore will lead to less production down-time.

During prolonged stoppages, grease the grab regularly.
