neighbourhood streets
with murals
An Edinburgh-based artist has told of her experience
of creating a beautiful mural near the Newkirkgate
shopping centre in Leith following her collaboration
with Mexican Eva Paredes.

A beautiful mural of colour has been
showcased near the Newkirkgate shopping
centre in Leith.
The design was created by Edinburgh-based
artist Draya Madu, 44, with Mexican
collaborator Eva Parades.
The work is nestled in Coatfield Lane in Leith
and is made up of bright colours celebrating
and remembering female empowerment
through strength and resilience.
Draya explained the journey of creating the
mural to Edinburgh Live and has been a
professional mural and street artist for more
than 20 years.
She said: "We wanted to add more colours to

the area of Coatfield Lane in Leith, we really
wanted to celebrate and remember women's

empowerment and that's why we decided to

use the purple colour. The girl looking  

representation of her dreams and freedom.

"The purple colour symbolises empowerment,
dignity and equality of women's voices. We
based it on a piece of history that symbolises
women's equality originating from the
women's social and political union in the UK in
1908."

Draya has designed murals across different

parts of the world including Peru, Columbia
Privacy
and Mexico.
 
She said: "I like telling stories and sending

messages through out my murals. Knowing
that when I first started painting it's what kept
me going. I consider myself an activist, so
painting murals that contains messages about
social and environmental issues it's my main
thing, I always try to include this type of
themes in most of my public art murals.

"I like making mural art more democratic so

people from anywhere can see it without the 
need to pay for a ticket or go into a gallery.
That's another of my intentions when painting
