MOBILE LEGEND: IMPACTS ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF THE

STUDENTS IN THE LYCEUM OF THE PHILIPPINES - CAVITE

INTRODUCTION

In the 21st Century, advanced technology influenced the gaming industry where the online
games are becoming more popular. It engaged millions of internet users to experience the new
genre of entertainment. In the Philippines, many Filipinos are highly engaged in online gaming
and most of them are students.

Mobile Legends: Bang Bang is one of the most popular online game in the country.
Everyone can download this app for free, however some game items can also purchase for real
money. This game was developed and published by Shanghai Moonton Technology. It is a 5v5
Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) for iOS and Android devices that offers a variety
playable heroes, games modes, and with controls optimized for touchscreen devices. It has a two
opposing team to defend their designated base. In the year 2020, Philippines were in Ranked No.
2 in the game highest number of download which have a 41.2 million or 15% of the app's total
number of downloads.

Online games influence many Filipino students in many ways. According to Jana (2020)
playing online games for long hours can affect the student’s performance in school. Studies have
shown that a higher amount of time spent in playing onscreen games can be associated with
lower academic performance. A survey has shown that 47% of heavy online players got poor
grades, while 23% of light users performed better than them. However, some study said it
enhances the student creativity and critical thinking. The action in the online games prepares the
gamers to make smart decisions in split seconds. Furthermore, they need acute attention to cope
with unexpected changes in the game.

Nowadays, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang has become popular for young generation. Some
studies assume it has a positive impact on student learning and even on overall education.
According to Bautista (2019) Mobile Legends: Bang Bang can actually help the players to
improve different skills that can be used in real life situations. Strategic thinking, critical
thinking, and multitasking skills are the best examples of the skills that can be developed and
nurtured while playing Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. Achieving the victory is the primary
objective of this game. Preparing a good plan design usingthe ideas in your head can really be a
good help to achieve it. Together with teammates connected by a server, the game also promotes
teamwork and social connectivity.

According to Jana (2020) online games such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang helps the
students to improve their problem-solving skills. It has a strategy that must be recognized by the
player to win a game. It enables their mind to be more active and it helps them to come up with
decisions in tight situations. In many cases there is a time pressure, which develops speed and
decision making skill. Studies have shown that playing online game such as Mobile Legends:
Bang Bang can also increase the student creativity.

Research has shown that an individual can improve their eye and hand coordination skill
from online games, especially from Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA). Through these
games, can be won through strategic planning, selective attention, sensorimotor skills, and
teamwork place considerable demands on the brain. The study revealed that the players of these
games have faster information processing, allocate more cognitive power to individual visual
stimuli, and allocate limited cognitive resources between successive stimuli more effectively
through time (Kershner, 2020).

Online games such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang can also can be played for stress relief.
Some students who play this game are just having fun. It also brought excitement to students.
The game like this can be used as a coping tool after exposure to stressful situations just like
having a load of academic activities (Scott, 2020).

The study sought by Garcia (2020) found out that the student to who became addicted to
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang may end up having a poor academic performance. When students
dedicate much time to play this, they tend to forget to do their school activities. This will lead
them to have a low grade and sometimes a failing grade. Moreover, a student can tend to suffer
from worsening learning ability and concentration problems.

According to Tumbokon (2020) academic achievement may be negatively related to the


over-all time spent playing video games. The study found out that student online game addicts
argue a lot with their teachers, fight a lot with their friends, and their grade is lower than the
students who play the online game less often. Some students admitted that used to skip their
homework just to play the game.
According to Dumrique& Castillo (2019) students' learning takes place unexpectedly, but
the inappropriate usage of playing online games also leads to some problems such as being
distracted in school. The studies revealed that the human brain is easy to destruct. Therefore,
playing this game can bring a huge impact on the student academic performance.

The objective of this study is to determine how Mobile Legends: Bang Bang affects the
students' intellectual capacity in relation to their academic performance.
METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This research aims to find out the impact of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang in students'
academic performance. With this objective in mind, the researchers will use a descriptive
research design that will be utilized in analyzing the data that will be gathered through the help
of survey questionnaires.

Statistical Treatment

The researchers will determine the response of the participants through the use of
descriptive statistical tools that include frequency and percentage.

The researchers used the frequency and a percentage distribution formula to determine
the percentage for the respondent’s profile and also to identify the frequency of the responses on
the item on the survey questionnaire.

Participant of the Study

The participants of the study are the selected 10 students of Lyceum of the Philippines
University - Cavite. The participants must be highly engaged in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.
The study will utilize a purposive sampling to get a total sample of 10 in the population of
approximately 100 individuals.
RESULT AND DISCUSSION

The attainment of the objectives of the study was made possible through the utilization of
the descriptive method of research. The sampling techniques were made through a purposive
sampling, where only the selected 10 students of Lyceum of the Philippines University - Cavite
who played Mobile Legends: Bang Bang answered the survey questionnaire. Furthermore, the
statistical treatment of data was done through the use of percentage. Based on the results of the
study, the following findings were drawn:

1 - 3 hours
4 - 6 hours
7 - 9 hours

The pie graph above shows the daily number of hours that the students spend on playing
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. The survey revealed that most students spent 4-6 hours a day for
playing Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. It gathered 50% or half of the population of the study.
However, least students spent 7-9 hours a day for playing Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. It
gathered 10% of the total population. The remaining 40% are those students who spent 1-3 hours
a day for playing Mobile Legends: Bang Bang.

The table above reveals the impacts of Mobile Legends: Bang Bang to the students'
academic performance. The data are presented using the given questions with its corresponding
percentage based on its verbal interpretations. According to the result, most of the students who
play Mobile Legends: Bang Bang develops their multitasking skill, problem solving skill, and
eye and hand coordination skill, it ranging 5-10 which was interpreted as "often" that got 50%.
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang also helps them to enlighten their mode after doing their school
works. On the other hand, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang can lead some students to have a low or
failing grade. This was shown in question number 3 which has a verbal interpretation "often" that
got 10% and "sometimes" that got 20%. Mobile Legends: Bang Bang can also distract some
students from doing their homework. On the last question, it reveals that Mobile Legends: Bang
Bang does affect the students' academic performance. It verbal interpretation "often" got 30%
and "sometimes" got 30%, while "seldom" got 40%. Therefore, the 10 respondents reveals that
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang has a positive and negative impacts on the students' academic
performance.

Recommendations

Based on the findings and conclusion of the study, the following recommendations were
drawn:

1. Students should play Mobile Legends: Bang Bang in their free time to lessen the
possibility of being addicted and in order to focus on their academic activities.
2. The University should notify the parents about their child's academic performance.
Considering the result of the study which reveals that Mobile Legends: Bang Bang can
lead to have low or failing grade in some students.
3. To improve the study, it is recommended that further study should be conducted
covering bigger population. Through this, the accuracy of the study will be
verified.

Conclusions

Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusion were drawn:

1. The student have a good academic performance despite their involvement in playing
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. However, Mobile Legends: Bang Bang can sometimes
affect their academic performance.
