EFFECT OF FACEBOOK USAGE IN

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF
GRADE 11 STUDENTS IN
MANAMBRAG NATIONAL HIGH
SCHOOL
Facebook is a social networking website which
launched in 2004 by Facebook Inc. it was initially
developed by student at Harvard University which
was Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook had 1 billion
active users around the world in 2012. This number
raised to 1.59 monthly active users (Statista, 2016).
Facebook is the leader of the social networking
website which has more users compare to other
social websites (AKBIYIK, 2013). Facebook has
usability to use and user have lots of feature to use
in order to share
photos, videos. Users also can add new friends,
comments and messaging each other’s (Servia-
Rodríguez et al, 2013).

Using Facebook a lot of time can impact on mental

health. Some studies show that using Internet for
lots of time make users addiction to it and listed in
to game addiction and Internet sex addiction.
Spectrum addiction disorder is a concept which is
used by some researchers (Elgendi, 2015).
Facebook addiction is seen to affect performance
both positively and negatively for e.g it has seen
that Facebook has a negative effect on
students grades that lead to poor academic
success whereas facebook also has positive
effects such that Facebook can provide a platform
for students to learn and share positive
material with each other’s which results in a
better outcome for students.
According to Newman (2013), they get distracted
from their studies, and a load on their working
memory makes it hard for them to have a focus
and make effective preparations for their
homework. This will lead to poor results and a
decrease in achievements. Some studies show
the attitudes and interests of students toward
the internet and their activities vary with their
sex, personality, traits, and age.
According to Ellison (2017), further investigation
into the issue may uncover more variables like
focus and intervention that may be strongly
related to academic performance. The negative
correlation between Facebook usage and
academic outcomes may be justified by some
negative impacts related to certain ways students
use this social medium. He observes that some
specific uses of this social media relate to
improved academic performance, while others
contribute to lower academic results.
Lau, W. W. (2017) stated that Facebook
harmfully affected social and non-academic such
as lacking experience and learning of practical
affairs which negatively affects the student's
classroom performance. Further Lau, W. W. (2017)
added that spending too many hours on social
media can cause anxiety among students.
Singh, D. A, 2014 analyze that excess using social
media among students could arouse their sexual
behavior which can further affect their academic
performance. Further, he added that right
usage may bring some good results and
improve students’ academic performance. The
social media addiction is linked with disruption
of academic performance, boredom, shortage of
time for following hobbies such as making new
friend zone, updating daily status, commenting
on each other’s profile and non-social behavior
development.
According to (Cavus et al., 2021), e-Learning and
social networking sites contribute to solving
education problems, especially in times of crises,
such as during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The study of (Mukhtar et al., 2020) shows many

positive advantages of e-Learning in terms of ease
of access and convenience of use in many
scientific fields. During the COVID-19 pandemic,
e-Learning offered an opportunity for sustainable
development. The
educational institutions that used it gained a
competitive advantage, through the redefinition of
teaching methods and channels of interaction (Sá
& Serpa, 2020).

Aljulboori, Fashakh & Bayah (2020) assert that

social media has had so much impact on students'
lives and most of these impacts are negative and
affect the academic performance of students.
Other authors believe that Facebook does have a
positive
influence on students' lives as it may strengthen
relationships, improve communication and assist in
socialization (González, Gasco & Llopis, 2016;. As
stated by Cheung & Lee (2010), social media use,
especially on Facebook, depends on an individual.

This study is to explore the relationships between

Facebook use and academic performance. This
study investigate the specific ways in which
Facebook use could
affect students' in their social live. This study
intent to bring the awareness among the senior
high students of manambrag national high
regarding the use of online social networks
particularly Facebook, to know that this Facebook
has negative effect despite of the positive effects
of this.
TITLE 3:

INFLUENCE OF ANIME-WATCHING ON
THE BEHAVIOR OF GRADE 11
STUDENTS IN MANAMBRAG
NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
Anime is a style of animation that originated
from Japan. In fact, the word “anime” is used to
describe animation in Japan. Anime have a very
unique style of storytelling and film making and
often the cinematography and details of
professional film making are used in making
anime. The characters and the environment in an
anime are described in depth and tend to have
detailed background stories. The artwork styles
of anime are unique and can be easily separated
from that of cartoons. Anime tend to focus more
on
facial characterization compared to cartoons.
Also, Japanese animation have all kinds of genres
to suit all ages and preferences including action,
comedy, science-fiction, romance, sports,
mystery, adventure, drama, fantasy, psychological
thrillers, horrors, space adventures, sitcoms, and
much more. (Ahsan, Sameen, 2014)

According to Daniel Bernard (March, 2018) Anime

is meant for entertainment purposes mostly, but
could also be used to help
educate as well depending on the creator’s vision
and purpose for making the series or movie.
Truthfully, some students, especially those who
have a difficult separating reality from fiction, will
take some of the anime they view to heart and
become obsessed and enthralled by the world and
characters presented in anime.

This finding is in line with Mamat et al (2014) who

found that there are some positive values in anime
that can be emulated, for instance
helping each other, being brave, not easily giving
up, working hard, caring and loving their parents
and so on. That said, it cannot be denied that
anime can also give some negative effects if it is
viewed excessively.

The study done by Yusra (2018) established that

anime also contains pornographic content can
influence one’s mental health and causes them to
fulfil their responsibility including religious acts of
worship.
Mamat et al. (2018), mentioned that the use of
manga and anime can help students master
Japanese language more easily. Next, Gaylican
(2013) found that those who are into anime tend
to be more interested in arts, and Jesus (2014)
discovered that teenagers who watch anime can
increase their aesthetic appreciation on arts as
they get older.

This finding was supported by Sameen (2014),

where it is stated that anime does not only make
the audience appreciate arts better, but indirectly
it can also increase their creativity.
The work done by Sameen (2014) showed that
anime can help teenagers understand the
difference between what is right and wrong, and
instill a sense of responsibility on one’s own
action other than teaching them how to be
honest, generous and respectful of others.

The study by Yusof (2019) found that although

anime gives a positive and significant impact on
one’s attitude and morality, it can also give some
significant negative impacts. Thus, the excessive
viewing of anime has to be prevented as it can
become destructive to a teenager’s self-
development. The excessive viewing of anime will
make a teenager become fanatical and too
engrossed in anime. This obsession is called
otaku.

According to Kamal and Ramadhan (2020),otaku

prefers to spend time watching anime, be alone
and fantasize. They are lost in their own world
and they do not like to socialize.
The work by Kamal and Ramadhan (2020) found
that there are several impacts on one’s psychology
if anime is watched excessively. The first one would
be the cognitive impact where anime can influence
the motivation and the pattern of thoughts in
decision-making. The second one is the affective
impact where due to excessive viewing, it can
influence one’s emotions and feelings and
gradually produce the change in the behaviour and
actions. The third impact is the attitudinal impact
where anime can stimulate and influence one’s
behavior.
Students idolized the main characters of anime
and thus the characters actions influence the
behavior of student themselves. Students can
learn about the moral aspects of life as most
character displays good moral values at different
points in the show.
However, some anime have content that
incorporate strong violence and sexual
conductance thus are not suitable for viewing by
students, often due to a lack of parent
supervision, students are exposed to this and they
can be negatively influenced in the form
of them mimicking the actions seen. Research on
the effects of watching anime on student’s can be
useful in determining what the actual effects
are(watching anime on students can be) and
whether they are positive or negative in nature.

The purpose of the study is to know what are the

bad and good effects in watching anime on the
behavior of senior high students in manambrag
national high school. To have them knowledge
about the effects of anime-watching in their
behaviors.
