CHAPTER 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
I. INTRODUCTION
Mobile games have become a part of our lives. They are quite popular among
people of all age groups because of their functions that provide us with
entertainment and offer a much-needed escape from the stresses of everyday life.
The common reasons that contribute to the popularity of mobile games are the
convenience, free to play, variety of games, scope of earning, and multiplayer and
game in chat (Juegoadmin 2023).
Mobile gaming has become more than just a hobby; it has become a lifestyle.
It has influenced music, fashion and even the way people interact with each other.
Mobile games have become their own language, with their own terms and slang
(Maggioli 2023). Mobile games have structural features that may affect a person in
many ways. One of the most important effects of mobile games on culture is its
ability to bring people together (Maggoioli 2023). Gaming has allowed people
around the world to connect and interact with each other, and it has provided a
platform for people to form communities and share their experiences with others.
Mobile gaming has allowed gamers to meet and play with people from different
backgrounds, cultures and countries, breaking down barriers and fostering
understanding between people who would otherwise never have met (Maggoioli
2023).
According to Adair (2019), playing mobile games can have positive effects and
benefits when played in moderation, including the improvement of cognitive
abilities, improved problem-solving skills and logic, increased hand and eye
coordination, greater multitasking ability, and having faster and more accurate
decision making. If a person plays games in moderation, for fun and recreation, they
may experience many benefits.
However, if they play games excessively to escape real-life problems, then you
may begin to experience problems from play, and in extreme cases, develop a
gaming disorder. The bad effects of video games can impact a persons physical and
mental health, or often times both (Adair 2019). Most educators and parents agree
that students playing mobile games are wasting their time. They see it as an activity
that stimulates the brain and exercises the fingers without other benefits. However,
playing smart games is one of the best ways for students to spend their free time
and have fun. Each player enters the game world to achieve something special.
Some want to make new friends, while others want positive emotions. There are
many reasons why students spend a lot of time downloading and playing mobile
games (Moroni 2022).
At Mayao Parada Agricultural Integrated High School, mobile games are really
popular. Some of the students here love gaming and they are always playing it
outside or even inside the schools during their free time. Sometimes this kind of
routine affects the performance of a student. The researchers aim to study the
matter and determine the relationship of the mobile games to the junior high
school students and its effect to the overall school performance of junior high
school students. It intends to give recognition and provide further information
about the current status of junior high school students on managing the usage of
mobile game and avoiding the conflict from playing it.
3. Is there a significant relationship between the use of mobile games and student's
school performance?
For educators. They would inform how mobile games can affect the
performance of students. In addition, they would improve their guiding
performance in terms of disciplining the students by playing mobile games.
For students. They would inform about the effect of mobile games on
learning. The output of this study would improve their knowledge of mobile games
and give them awareness of the possible impact of mobile games on their school
performance, which makes them improve by being responsible gamers.
For parents. They would enlighten them through mobile games. Their child
could possibly change their school performance in a good way or even the worst
way. Also, they would improve their guiding performance to make their child
responsible for playing video games
V. HYPOTHESIS
H1: There is a significant relationship between the use of mobile games and
student's school performance
Mobile Game - the term mobile games refers to video games that are played by a
mobile device.
School Performance - in this study this term refers to the level of academic
achievement of students within a school setting as well as their performance in
other areas.
