MACHINING PROCESSES

Objective: To know the types of machine tools, their functions and how to operate them.

Apparatus: Different types of machine tools and cutting tools.

Safety precaution for machine shop

1. Do not operate any machine tool unless authorized to do.
2. Do not try to stop the machine with your hands or body.
3. Do not lean against the machines.
4. Do not talk to another when they are operating a machine.
5. Concentrate on the work and don’t talk unnecessary while operating a machine.
6. When working with other students, only one should operate machine or switches.
7. Always see that work and cutting tools on any machine are clamped securely before starting.

Theory
A machine tool is a machine for making articles of a given shape, size and accuracy by
removing metal from workpiece.

Machine tools can be divided according to their specialization into the following categories.

General purpose or basic machine tools

These are used for performing all metal cutting operations within their range. These include
universal lathe, milling, grinding, shaping, planning machines.

Production machine tools

These are used to reduce the manufacturing cost and to increase the rate of producing. These
are generally multi station tooling machines and designed at a time for one type of job. These
include Capstan and Turret lathes, semi automatic lathes, production milling machines, multiple
head drilling machines etc.

Special purpose or single purpose machine tools

These are used for mass production and generally one machine is capable of production only
one type of job. These include gear generator, camshaft grinder, piston turning lathe, thread
rolling machine, etc.
