Problem
Major development works were undertaken at Taganito
Mines, Surigao del Norte, Philippines for the develop-
ment of mineral explorations in the area. One of he chal-
lenges in the site that needs immediate attention was the
thick deposits of clay soils and the presence of shallow
groundwater. These conditions have been found to pro-
duce large uneven vertical deformation (differential set-
tlement) of the soils when left untreated due to the
amount of loads that need to be transferred to the under-
lying strata. Therefore, a fast, economical and effective
geotechnical measure was required to address the is-
sue.
Solution
Based on the findings by the Client (Sumitomo Mitsui
Construction Co., Ltd.), prefabricated vertical drains
were found to be the most economical and viable solu-
tion. Maccaferri’s MacDrain PVDs was introduced and
has been duly approved by the Consultant to conform
with the designed degree of consolidation required in
the project. A foundation contractor was commissioned
to place the vertical drains into their designed depths
spacings. MacDrain PVDs consist a polypropylene
drainage cuspated core covered with a spun-bonded
polyester filter fabric. The fabric allows water to pass During Construction August 2010
into the drain core while restricting the movement of soil
particles which might clog the core, thus allowing faster
consolidation.
