would unpack the implicit bias that each of the news agencies contain.

Lingual Elements: Some of the lingual features that can be looked into are
diction and syntax which would reveal the implicit bias that anyone carries.
TASK:
Read the following headlines. Analyse the language that is used in the headlines
to identify the perspective communicated by each media on the issue. It would
also reveal the purpose of the news article.

Headline 1

Hardeep Singh Nijjar is an Indian Khalistani. He is a big supporter of Justin


Trudeau, the Prime minister of Canada.

This article has a slight bias against the Khalistani. The killing has a negative
connotation to it and by giving constant updates about these atrocities, there is a
bias against Najjar.
Hardeep Singh Nijjar is the subject. Killing row and allegations are the object of
the sentence. Defends is the verb of this sentence. Defense is done against
something that is offensive. Nijjar has committed the offense which further
creates bias.

Headline 2

Canada is the subject and so is Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Killing has a negative
connotation to it. The ties between Canada and India are the subject of the
sentence. Soured is the verb. Soured means how their relationships have spoiled
due to Nijjar. This creates a bias against Nijjar.

Headline 3

Mounting tensions are the object. Indian Diaspora in Canada is the subject. By
showing that tensions are created by the Indian Diaspora (alienizing these
Khalistani), a bias is being created.

Headline 4

Widens is the verb of the sentence. India is the subject asking the object, Indian
citizens to be careful about travelling to Canada. Rift is another word which
shows that there is turmoil due to Sikh Leader’s Death. This creates a bias
against Canada as they are seemingly less secure than before due to Khalistani.
