● Literacy is the ability to use printed and written information to function in society, to
achieve one's goals, and to develop one's knowledge and potential.

● Media are the communication outlets or tools used to store and deliver information or
data.

● Media literacy is an expanded conceptualization of literacy that includes the ability to

access and analyze media messages as well as create, reflect and take action, using
the power of information and communication to make a difference in the world.

● Information is an abstract concept that refers to that which has the power to inform. At
the most fundamental level, information pertains to the interpretation (perhaps formally)
of that which may be sensed, or their abstractions.

● Information Literacy is a set of abilities that require individuals to "recognize when

information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the
needed information." Information literacy is also increasingly important in the
contemporary environment of rapid technological change and proliferating information
resources. Because of the escalating complexity of this environment, individuals are
faced with diverse, abundant information choices.

● Technology literacy is simply the ability to use technology safely, effectively, and
responsibly. Along with media literacy, it falls under the broader term of “digital literacy.”
While media literacy is similar in that it is the ability to understand information presented
to us across the internet, newspapers, books, and television, “media literacy” is more
commonly used to refer to the ability to analyze information and decide what is
trustworthy and what is false or misleading.

● Media and Information Literacy is defined as the knowledge and skills
required to find, analyse, critically evaluate and generate information in
various media and contexts.
