Homework policy: Late homeworks will be marked down by 20% per day. If you know that you need to
turn in a homework late because of an emergency or academic travel, please let the TA team know ahead
of time. Collaboration is encouraged on homework assignments, however, the homework that you submit
should reflect your own understanding of the material.

For any analytical derivations, if you used ChatGPT or some other program, please attach a printout of
the prompts you used and indicate how you modified the AI answers to obtain your answer.

Problem 1 (35 pts) [MRI Lecture 7]

1. MATLAB grader problem (20 pts) –Image contrast problem.
2. Off-line (15 pts): Submit (1) a copy of the images; (2) comment on the relative brightness of
different tissues in each image and whether it makes sense; and (3) use the saturation recovery
equation to provide an explanation for why the optimal choice of TR provides better contrast
between gray and white matter versus the “rule of thumb” choice of parameters for the T1-
weighted image.

Optional Extra Credit (10 pts)

Derive the expression that is used in the maxT1contrast.m program referenced in the MATLAB grader
problem.
