4. INSTALLATION
PRECAUTIONS DURING INSTALLATION
This apparatus contains an inverter system. Its oscillation frequency
(from few Hz to several kHz) may fall within the audibility range of the
human ear.
A high-pitched note will therefore be issued during the radiography
phase.
• Type:
Shielded cable with 25 conductors.
3 mm² unipolar ground cable.
• Function:
Transmission of signals between the microprocessor located on the
command console and the microcomputer located in the power rack.
All the commands selected by the operator via the keyboard are
transmitted in serial format.
• Connections:
This cable has a Cannon DB25 connector that must be connected to
connector J4 located on the MPU PCB 9999102700 (paragraph 12.1).
The following figure shows the connections via the cables supplied with
the appliance of the various modules that comprise the Genius HF.
Figure 4-1
Remove the high voltage transformer from its packaging. Remove any
traces of oil and check the oil level as indicated in paragraph 3.1.2.
The maximum distance between the level of the oil and the lid must not
exceed 25 mm.
Position the transformer inside the power rack in its place at the bottom
of the rack.
The slots for the high voltage terminals must be at the front of the rack.
Figure 4-2
Four 10 mm² unipolar cables connect the high voltage transformer to the
power inverter.
These are marked 1, 2, 3, 4 and have M8 screw terminals.
They must be connected using the appropriate screws issuing from the
transformer lid (see Figure 4-2).
Their electrical function is shown in diagram PCB 5812 power circuit
(paragraph 12.3).
WARNING:
1 After all the wires have been connected as described above, the red M6
vent screw located on the high voltage transformer lid must be loosened.
The generator has been set for connection to a 3~ 400 Volt power supply
at a frequency of 50 Hz.
With this supply the maximum mains resistance is 0.20 ohm.
• Connection to 3~ 400V
The mains supply must be connected to the mains filter via three M8
screw terminals located at the back of the power rack.
A cable cross section area between 10 mm² and 25 mm² for each
conductor must be used.
Connect the yellow/green ground conductor with the same cross
section as the mains connectors to the corresponding terminal.
WARNING:
1 Always disconnected the generator from the mains supply before taking
any action on the high voltage cable terminals.
Figure 4-3
The rotating anode connections for both the simple and the double speed
starters are made on the general terminal boards GTB 100 - 200 - 300
(see diagram 5813 Main Service Transformer, paragraph 12.3).

PCB 9999102800 (paragraph 12.2).
At this point the GTB 432 input (PCB 9999102900 paragraph 12.2) must
be polarized to 0 V dc to start exposure.
This external X-ray request input (potter) must be activated by the
configuration program as described in paragraph 9.2.
These functions include the signals output from the generator and used
by the various external devices.
Normally, these comprise relay contacts insulated at 2500 V ac to
ground.
These contacts may be loaded with a maximum current of 3 Amp in
alternate current. For interfacing with electronic systems, optoinsulators
with a driving capacity of approximately 10 mA are included for the most
important signals.
It is also possible to select the logic level via jumpers. (See PCB
9999102800 General Terminal Board 300 paragraph 12.2).
These contacts are normally open and close when the X-ray tube has
been selected.
The contacts are located on the GTB terminal boards at the following
numbers:
• 104-105 and 106-107 for tube 1 PCB 9999103600 paragraph 12.2
• 204-205 and 206-207 for tube 2 PCB 9999103700 paragraph 12.2
• 304-305 and 306-307 for tube 3 PCB 9999102800 paragraph 12.2
These are two contact couples that are usually open and used to inform
the external user that a radiography preparation is in course.
The two couples on the GTB 300 terminal board (PCB 9999102800
paragraph 12.2) are:
• 314-315
• 316-317.
These are two contact couples that are usually open and used to inform
the external user that a radiography exposure is in course.
The two terminal couples on the GTB 300 terminal board (PCB
9999102800 paragraph 12.2) are:
• 318-319
• 320-321.
This signal is also present on the GTB 328 terminal (PCB 9999102800
paragraph 12.2) and differs from the above contacts since the signal
derives from an optoinsulator whose activation and deactivation speed is
greater. The polarity may be selected via jumpers.
These are two groups of two contact couples each one of which is usually
open; the other is normally closed and used to inform the external user
that a continuous fluoroscopy is in course.
The two terminal couples on the GTB 300 terminal board (PCB
9999102800 paragraph 12.2) are:
• First group
– 323-324 contact open
– 323-325 contact closed
• Second group:
– 326-325 contact open
– 326-327 contact closed.
This signal is also present on the GTB 329 terminal (PCB 9999102800
paragraph 12.2) and differs from the above contacts since the signal
derives from an optoinsulator whose activation and deactivation speed is
greater. The polarity may be selected via jumper contacts.
The group of contacts that are normally open and that con supply power
to the Potter Bucky are two.
The first is located on GTB 100 board (PCB 9999103600 paragraph 12.2)
and the second on the GTB 200 board (PCB 9999103700 paragraph
12.2).
Closure of these contacts occurs at the end of the radiography
preparation time once all the procedures have been terminated correctly
and if the operator requests radiography by pressing the second position
on the X-ray push-button.
There are two groups of contacts for the selection of the five workstations
on the GTB 100 (PCB 9999103600 paragraph 12.2) and GTB 200
(PCB 9999103700 paragraph 12.2) terminal boards.
The two groups are available on the following terminals of the general
terminal board:
• First group
• Second group
NOTE:
/ The kHUT percentage is displayed on the leds on the command console.
When the safety limit has been reached the exposure sequence is
interrupted by the microprocessor.
These are signals input to the generator from external devices or from
push-buttons or pedals.
The majority of these signals are activated when polarized at 0Vdc.
The external contacts that perform these closures must be suitable for a
continuous voltage of 24Vdc and a current of 10 mA.
Figure 4-4
If the input at pin 453 on the GTB 400 (PCB 9999102900 paragraph
12.2) is not polarized at 0 V dc, the fluoroscopy or radiography exposure
is halted.
This function is activated from the workstations via the configuration
program described at paragraph 9.2.
There are three couples of terminals (one for each tube) to connected to
the tube thermal protection.
The points are the following:
• Tube 1 GTB 411 0Vdc
• Tube 1 GTB 412 thermal input
• Tube 2 GTB 415 0Vdc
• Tube 2 GTB 416 thermal input
• Tube 3 GTB 419 0Vdc
• Tube 3 GTB 420 thermal input
PCB 9999102900 (paragraph 12.2).
The input on the GTB 400 terminal board (PCB 9999102900 paragraph
12.2) at point 450 must always be polarized at 0 V dc (GTB 449) to
activated the X-rays emission. This protection must always be connected
to an external contact that inhibits all emission.
Monophase voltages are present on the general GTB terminal boards that
may be used to supply external services.
These supplies may be used only for loads of less than 3 A (see the
protection fuse value on drawing 5812 paragraph 12.3).
It must be remembered that these supplies show a decrease in voltage
during the initial preparation phase when the normal speed starter
present inside the generator.
The voltages available are the following.
• 0Vac GTB 101 and GTB 201
• 230Vac GTB 102 and GTB 202
PCB 9999103600 and PCB 9999103700 (paragraph 12.2)

5. CONFIGURATIONS
5.1. General
5.2. Workstations
The possible names to be set are given in the vocabulary list of the User
Manual.
Select the name of the workstation from the vocabulary list using the
appropriate keys, as described in paragraph 9.2.
5.2.4. Fluoroscopy
The maximum value of the fluoroscopy current may be selected from the
following values:
0.5 - 1.0 - 1.5 - 2.0 - 2.5 - 3.0 - 4.0 - 5.0 mA
For special applications, fluoroscopy may be made using the large focus
instead of the small focus.
This option is activated with the addition of the JP8 jumper option.
The jumper is located on the PCB 9999104200 printed circuit of the PPU
Peripheral Processing Unit (paragraph 12.1) located inside the console.
Figure 5-1
This safety function is activated via the AEC blackening key (+).
The activation is evidenced by the lighting up of the 7 AEC blackening
leds.
This safety function is deactivated via the AEC blackening key (-).
With this function activated, the radiography and fluoroscopy exposures
are possible only if the IPD input signal is active (GTB 453 – PCB
9999102900 paragraph 12.2 - connected to 0 V dc).
Radiogenic tubes with a rotating anode and two high voltage polarities
may be connected to the Genius HF generator.
The starter supplied with the generator allows the anode to rotate at
3000 revs.
A high speed starter (9000 revs.) may be installed upon request.
The use of the high or low rotation speed depends upon the maximum
load or on the selections made by the operator.
The following three configurations are possible with the high speed
starter:
1. Only normal speed (3000 revs.).
2. Only high speed (9000 revs.).
3. Both speeds (3000 and 9000 revs.) according to the load or selection.
NOTE:
/ If an incorrect value is selected (e.g. high speed with normal starter
installed), the data is accepted but the function will not be activated. If
the "hs" value has been input (paragraph 5.2.3), the anode will turn at
high speed at that workstation, irregardless of the number input in this
field.
In some cases the cooling curves are expressed in kilo-joules (kJ also
called kilo Watt secs. kWs).
The conversion value to transform this unit in kHU is as follows:
kHU = 1,33 x kJ
An additional computer is not required for the input of data; the console
is used as access terminal to the principal computer. The keys assume a

• Minimum dose value
The minimum dose (expressed in mV) is displayed on the
numerical kV fluoroscopy display, and must be read by the
exposure meter during emission in order to proceed with the
radiography.
If, during the initial milliseconds of exposure the measured dose
is lower than the set dose (caused by a too high density for the
set parameters or by lack of radiation of the selected
dominant[s]), radiography is immediately suspended and the
generator enters into the alarm state "AEC DOSE SAFETY".

5.7. Tomography
6. CALIBRATION
6.1. General
This chapter supplies all the necessary information for setting the
parameters for the X-ray tubes function.
The regulation of these parameters: focusing and correction of the high
voltage kV values are discussed here below.
CALIBRATE
k*kV
6. Press the Reset key. The message Calibration k*kV will appear on the
FIP.
The value of the kV correction parameter will appear on the
fluoroscopy kV display.
To increase or decrease this value, press the keys >5R and Reset
min. fluoroscopy.
The default value is 100. This means that the multiplying factor of
the theoretical value of the kV is 1.
With this condition, the real value of the high voltage kV is equal to
the calibration value obtained during the testing of the equipment.
To verify the correspondence between the set kV values and the
detected values, connect an oscilloscope between ground and the
signal [ikv] on test point TP5 of PCB 9999192500 Converter Control
Board (paragraph 12.1).
The ratio for the reading of the reference value is 10 V = 200 kV.
Perform radiography with a current value of 100 mA.
If the value of the kV reading is less than 2% that of the set value,
the number to input is 102.
The same concept is used if the voltage value is higher.
The percentage error in excess must be calculated and this
percentage detracted from 100.
EXAMPLE:
Radiography data 90 kV - 100 mA - 0.8 sec
Value read on oscilloscope 4.65 V (ratio 10 V = 200 kV)
Real kV value 93
Error 3.3 %
Datum to input 103.
These are the current values for the filament heating expressed in amps
and obtained from the filament characteristics supplied by the
manufacturer of the radiogenic tube.
These values must be input into the computer and are used to inform the
relevant circuit to regulate the value of the filament heating current.
This current value must be given for both focuses and for all the tubes
installed.
The typical stand-by current value for tubes with filament of a maximum
current of 5.5 A and 2.5 A.
In all cases, this is the value that must be set so as not to cause an issue
of high voltage current.
This value corresponds to the value of the filament current that enables
us to obtain approximate 6 mA in radiography on the small focus and
25 mA in radiography for the large focus.
This value is obtained from the filament heating curves given by the
manufacturer of the radiogenic tube and may be adjusted during the
calibration procedure of the radiography current.
1. Via the ON key, switch on the equipment. After 5 seconds the console
will display the data program.
2. After opening the front panel of the power rack, turn the switch
located on the front of 9999102700 Master Processing Unit

NOTE:
/ The release of the fluoroscopy command blocks emission and
consequently blocks the heating detection procedure. The procedure is
resumed at the point of interruption via the fluoroscopy command.
WARNING:
1 Because this is a manual calibration, data for the performance of
calibration radiographs will be provided throughout this entire phase.
It is the operator's responsibility to ensure that the limit values of the
radiogenic tube's maximum load are not exceeded.
1. Via the ON key, switch on the equipment. After 5 seconds the console

STEP 0 = 3600
+000.00000 +000.00000 +000.00000
The first line of the FIP indicates the STEP number and the value of
the minimum filament current expressed in mA (3600). When the
second line of the FIP has the three values equal to zero, this means
that the STEP is not calibrated and calibration must be made.
The selection of the step is made via the ORG 1 (increase) and +mA
(decrease) keys.
10. Once selection of the desired STEP has been made, press key M1 to
confirm.
The first line of the FIP displays the following information:
WARNING:
1 The selection of a high current value with respect to the real value may
be due to a kV waveform with a strong oscillation at the start. The
selection of a low current value with respect to the real value may be due
to a kV waveform with a high ripple (greater than 10%) or to the
automatic switch-off of the equipment due to the circuit breaker (Led
DL21, PCB 9999103000 Safety Supervisor, paragraph 12.1).
The real kV and mA fields (indicated as zero in the figure) will, in fact
indicate the values measured with the last exposure before pressing
the M1 key.
The second line of the FIP displays the three coefficients A, B and C
that were calculated during the last exposure.
By pressing the M1 key, the three calculated coefficients, including
their positive or negative sign, are memorized.
A beep confirms that we are ready to proceed with the calibrations
and with another STEP.
14. The following STEP is then proposed.
The procedure considered until now is valid for all STEPS through to
STEP 9.
Each time we confirm the values of the coefficients calculated by the
computer, the successive STEP will be proposed up the last which is
STEP 9.
If the maximum load of the radiogenic tube does not allow all the
STEPS to be completed, this is because the maximum radiography
current for the filament is too high.
Changing this value means the resetting of all the coefficients
calculated and the consequent total repetition of the calibration
exposures.
It is not necessary to complete the calibration of all ten STEPS but,
as mentioned above, the greater the volume of data memorized the
higher the precision of the emission during normal operations.
As well as being influenced by the thermal state of the anode and the
cathode of the radiogenic tube, the precision of the radiography
current value depends upon the precision of the calculations that the
appliance will perform during the radiography preparation phase
NOTE:
/ To reduce the effect due to the variation of the emission current, we
recommend performing the first radiographs approximately 30 minutes
after the focus has been switched on from stand-by.
To quit the program at the end of the calibration, press the Sturdy Build
key and set the service switch on the MPU to OFF.
The procedure for the calibration of the large focus is more or less the
same as for the small focus.
Follow the procedure as per the preceding paragraph, with the following
variations:
1. Select the large focus when the FIP displays the selection of the focus
to be calibrated.
2. The minimum emission current value at STEP 0 is not between 6 and
7 mA as for the small focus but between 20 and 25 mA.
This is because the heating values for a minimum value of 32 mA in
radiography are calculated.
3. The default value of the radiography calibration mA is not 100 mA as
for the small focus but 300 mA.
This value may be changed from 32 to 800 (1000 mA in the case of
the Genius HF 80 kW).
The circuit breaker value is the value selected on the display
increased by 40%.
4. Special attention must be given to the forecast value so that the
selection of the radiography times is such as not to cause exposures
with an overload of anodic power.
This could occur for high filament current values (high STEPS).
Short time exposure values are preferable for these STEPS.
Preferable times are lower or equal to 0.1 s with an optimum time
being 0.05 s.
5. If it is impossible to memorize three valid kV-mA couples with high
heating values and consistent emission current variation with voltage
values between 40 - 60 - 80 kV, the voltage value automatically
proposed by the program can be changed using the +/- kV keys.
With this possibility, the first exposure of the STEP can be performed
at 40 kV (a value automatically proposed by the program), the second
at 50 kV (set manually instead of 60 kV) and the third at 60 kV.
In this way the emission current variations due to increases in the kV
values will be limited and will not exceed the 1000 mA or 1200 mA
emission values that automatically block radiography.
The 800 mA current is the blocking limit for the Genius 65 kW
generator.
The 1000 mA current is the blocking limit for the Genius 80 kW
generator.

7. Press the key +kV to change the number of the tube from which to
copy the calibration.
Press the key Reset to change the number of the tube on which to

Once the selection has been made confirm by pressing the key M1.
8. While the data is being copied, the FIP displays the message "PLEASE

• Block 1
This block constitutes the interface between the inverter with the
mains. Here there are the three-phase jumper safety switches, the
capacitors and inductors for the power supply to the DC-RAIL and to
enable the transfer of power to the inverter.
• Block 2
This block constitutes the power inverter and the converter control
board PCB 9999102500.
• Block 3
This block constitutes the H.V. transformer.
• Block 4
This block constitutes the electronic group.
This group contains:
– the PCB 9999103000 supervisor card and the power supply card
– the normal speed starter anode card PCB 9999103200
– the inverter filament driver PCB 9999102600
– the optional normal and high speed starter PCB 9999103400 /
PCB 9999103300.
• Block 5
This block constitutes the principal microprocessor (Master
Processing Unit) PCB 9999102700 and the A.E.C. PCB 9999104300.
• Block 6
This block is positioned at the front of the generator and is called the
general terminal board (GTB). It is the interfacing block with the
outside accessories.
Refer to the Figure 6-2 for a better understanding of the description here
below.
The kV regulation loop is completely analogic.
This means that the microprocessor does not enter into this regulation
directly. It recognizes the real value of the KV and the state of the
generator thanks to the digital signals received from the inverter.
Refer to the Figure 6-2 for a better understanding of the description here
below.
The mA regulation loop is completely controlled by the microprocessor.
This means the microprocessor recognizes the mA emission value that at
all times during exposure.
The microprocessor can change the emission value by changing the
filament heating value.
The measurements involved in this regulation are:
• Current measurement circuit
– (ich) for high radiography current
– (icm) for medium radiography current
– (ifc) for fluoroscopy current.
The current signal is taken from the H.V. transformer and taken to
the CCB by the J4 connector.
Here, it is measured by a circuit and amplified according to the
following scales:
– (ich): 10 V dc = 1500 mA
– (icm): 10 V dc = 150 mA
– (icl): 10 V dc = 10 mA.
• MPU card
A/D of the microprocessor, used to convert the analogic signal of the
mA to a digital signal and, D/A, to generate the reference analogic
signal of the filament heating.
• Inverter filament driver card
This card provides for the heating of the filaments.

7.1. Characteristics
7.2. Signals
The connection between the Genius HF and the VDR 2000 digital system
has been optimized and simplified thanks to the highly advanced
software developed.
Few signals are therefore used to synchronize the generator with the
digital system.
These in/out signals are present on the PCB.
The term signals timing indicates the time that those signals involved in
a particular sequence (radiography and pulsed or continuous
fluoroscopy) require to achieve a correct functioning of the machine.
In the configuration operations the dose level for the fluoroscopy must be
regulated.
The parity value [C] defined as that voltage value for which we consider
reached the optimal dose level is intrinsic to the TV camera or TV system
used. The variation interval is 1.5 Volts.
The variation range of this signal [B] must then be set, i.e. the window
around the parity value on which the signal is piloted.
This couple of values must be input for both the pulsed and the
continuous fluoroscopy.
As mentioned, the typical values of these data are B=1003 and C=+703
as they are closely linked to the VDR 2000 digital device used.
The above numbers are compound numbers. Their significance is as
follows:
• C= ±abcd
a= thousands of equal mV
b= hundreds of equal mV
c= tens of equal mV
d= sampling interval with values from 0 = 16 msecs to
9 = 200 msecs
• B= efgh
e= window for reading in thousands mV around a parity value
f= window for reading in hundreds mV around a parity value
g= window for reading in tens mV around a parity value
h= dead band with values from 0 = 7 bit to 9 = 210 bit.
The term Zero Point Technique indicates a working technique where the
radiography parameters are automatically set by the system on the basis
of the value obtained either manually or automatically during
fluoroscopy.
The fluoroscopy kV value is automatically regulated according to the
density of the patient during fluoroscopy.
The radiography time displayed on the generator in this mode is to be
considered as the limit time.

11. MAINTENANCE
In order to ensure the safety of the patient, the operator and of other
parties that could come into contact with the equipment, we recommend
an inspection of the machine to be made at least every 12 months.
11.1.1. Cleaning
WARNING:
1 The appliance must be switched off before any cleaning action is
undertaken.
WARNING:
1 Protective clothing must be worn when performing any tests that require
the emission of radiation. Adequate distance must be kept from the
source and, if necessary, the personal dosimeter must be used.
Before starting the day's work, a visual inspection of the machine must
be made, and any damage reported to VILLA SISTEMI MEDICALI.
During the tests check that the yellow fluoroscopy and radiography rays
indicator lights up.
Check that the cables and electrical connections are not damaged in any
way.
No unusual noise should issue from the inverter.
A.E.C. test
1. Completely close the jaws of the collimator.
2. Activate the AEC device.
3. Make one exposure. The emission must be blocked immediately.
4. Open the collimator and carefully place an object of medium density
on the patient resting surface (in aluminum or iron with small
thickness).
5. Make one exposure. In this case the radiation indicator must remain
ON for a time depending upon the density of the object and the set
kV value.
A.B.C. test
1. Completely close the jaws of the collimator.
2. Make one fluoroscopy exposure with the A.B.C. device inserted. The
yellow fluoroscopy indicator must remain lit during the entire time of
exposure and the dose, given as a kV-mA value on the display, must
rise to the maximum value.
3. Stop fluoroscopy.
4. Open the collimator and make a new fluoroscopy. In this case, the
radiation indicator must remain ON and the dose must fall to the
lowest level.

• The error detected for the verified parameters must not exceed 5% for
the kV and 10% for the mA
• If significant differences are obtained for the kV values, contact VILLA
SISTEMI MEDICALI before proceeding with the calibration
• If there are significant differences in the mA values, before
commencing a new calibration check to see whether the PCB
9999102600 is correctly supplied with power, the terminal pins of
the high voltage cables are clean and wide and that the tube
filaments are heated
• kV accuracy.
If the kV value is not within the limits given on the table, appropriate
calibration must be made on the gain and feedback potentiometers
on the PCB 9999102500 Converter Control Board (paragraph 12.1).
Regulate the issued kV value via potentiometer R38.
Regulate the kV value read on the MPU and presented on the display
inside the rack via potentiometer R251
• mA accuracy.
If the mA value is not within the limits given in the table, the focus
calibration must be repeated.
This is valid if only one focus is out of limits.
If the problem lies with both focuses, calibration must be made on
the gain potentiometers on the PCB 9999102500 Converter Control
Board (paragraph 12.1).
There are three channels for measuring the mA values on this card:
– ICL fluoroscopy channel 10 V = 10 mA (potentiometer R32)
– ICM low mA values radiography channel with 10 V = 150 mA
scale (potentiometer R69)
– ICH high mA values radiography channel 10 V = 1500 mA scale
(potentiometer R54)
The EEprom located on the MPU is used to contain a copy of the data
present on the buffered RAM.
During routine operations, the microprocessor uses the data contained in
the RAM without using the contents of the EEprom.
The following data is automatically memorized on the EEprom without
any request of intervention to the operator:
• the contents of the anatomical programs available to the user
• the data related to the configuration phase
• the data related to the calibration values of the three radiogenic
tubes (six focal spots).
The EEprom has a non-volatile support function.
In this way it is possible to automatically load all the data related to an
installation onto a new MPU when this card is substituted.
We recommend a recording be made on EEprom at the end of the
installation.
The back-up, i.e. the recording of the data on the EEprom, is made every
time an anatomical program or configuration or calibration program is
completed.
This operation must be performed every time the MPU or buffer RAM
needs to be substituted. The average life-span of the buffer battery is five
years.
If the FIP displays the following message: Error! Call servicing technician
it may be necessary to load the data from EEprom to RAM.
The following procedure must be performed to activated this function:
1. Open the front panel of the power rack and turn the switch located
on the front of PCB 9999102700 MPU V25 to the right (paragraph
12.1).
2. Switch on.
3. After approximately three seconds, the following message appears on
the FIP:
confirming that the EEprom data has been read. Then turn the
switch on the MPU to its original position (towards the left).

NOTE:
/ If the new CPU board (Rev. 05) must be installed on a units having serial
number lower than 798k0, remove EPROM U91 from the old MPU
board and install it on the new one in place of the existing EPROM. This
action is required to match the revision level of the other software already
installed on the unit itself.
In case the new MPU board is installed on units having serial number
equal or higher than 798k0, the software mounted on the new MPU
board is compatible with the equipment and therefore no any further
action is required.
