PAST TENSE PRACTICE:

Regular and Irregular
Regular Past Tense: the same with ALL subjects (he/she/it/you/we/I):
Add -d or -ed to the verb.
Ex. laugh --> We/I/You laughed a lot at the movies.
watch --> I watched TV shows on Saturday night.
You watched TV shows on Mondays.
We watched TV shows on the weekend.
Now, write each past tense verb ending correctly in the blank below:
There is one grammar mistake. Can you find it? Mark it if you see it. Have you ever done this in your writing?
Ex. laugh --> She laugh ed when she watches the TV show.
1. smile --> He smile___ a lot when he saw his girlfriend.
2. like --> She like___ seeing him, too!
3. remember -->He never remember__ __ to bring his homework.
5. match: Her shirt match__ __ her pants.

Irregular Past Tense: the same with ALL subjects(he/she/it/you/we/I):

You must change the WHOLE verb, not just the ending:
Ex. to be --> I/He/She/It was...
We/You/They were...

to find --> I/He/She/It found...

They/we/you found a lot of fun things to do.
eat --> He ate in the cafeteria everyday.
She ate in the cafeteria everyday.
The dog ate my homework!

make --> She made us speak in English in class.

He made cakes for his parents' birthday party.
It made me happy to see my high grade.
do --> It did not always make sense to try harder.
He did a lot of fun things last weekend.
take a risk --> I took a risk by coming here.

can --> She did want to come to the party, but she couldn't because she woke up late!
wake up --> I couldn't come on time because I woke up late.
* If you use CAN, CAN'T, DID or DIDN'T in the past tense + a verb (COULDN'T ask, DIDN'T
come, COULD see, DID see), the SECOND verb does NOT change.
▪ COULD have: I could have come, but I didn't want to.
▪ COULDN'T feel: I couldn't feel it when the doctor tapped my knee.
▪ DID know: I did know the event was last night, but I didn't have time to come.
▪ DID not demonstrate: He did not demonstrate a capacity for growth.
Next, write the verb in the past tense correctly for every blank:
Ex. find --> She found a lot of fun things at the mall.
1. do --> He _________ not listen well in class.
2. do --> The baby ___________ not cry a lot last night.
3. do --> She never ________ her homework last weekend.
4. can (remember, use could!) --> My team ___________ win, but we didn't do it a lot.
5. can --> He ___________ see a lot of people laughing inside.
6. can --> This class __________________ be really helpful if you tried harder.
7. find --> The author __________ a lot of information online to help her research.
8. find --> She ___________ out that she won first place!
