INTRODUCTION TO WATER MANAGEMENT AND IRRIGATION
Engr. Renier C. Derubio, RABE

LABORATORY 1: UNDERSTANDING IRRIGATION PRACTICES THROUGH FARMER INTERVIEWS

GENERAL OBJECTIVE:

The primary objective of this activity is to provide students with a practical understanding of irrigation systems
in agriculture by conducting interviews with local farmers. Through these interviews, students will gain insights
into the challenges, practices, and innovations related to irrigation, fostering a connection between theoretical
knowledge and real-world applications.

METHODOLOGY for INTERVIEW:

Pre-Interview Preparation:
1. Define Interview Goals:
• Clearly outline the specific goals and objectives of the interview. This may include
understanding irrigation system types, assessing efficiency, and exploring challenges and
innovations.
2. Select Participants:
• Identify and select two (2) farmers who use various irrigation systems, considering factors
such as farm size, crop variety, and geographic location.
3. Prepare Interview Questions:
• Develop a set of open-ended questions covering key areas such as farm background,
irrigation system details, maintenance practices, technological integration, and sustainability
efforts.
4. Train Interviewers:
• Provide training for the interviewers (students) on effective communication, active listening,
and cultural sensitivity. Ensure they understand the goals of the interview and the importance
of unbiased data collection.

Interview Execution:
5. Introduction (Step 1):
• Begin the interview by introducing the purpose and goals. Obtain consent for recording, if
applicable.
6. Background Information (Step 2):
• Collect basic information about the farmer, farm size, crops grown, and the duration of
irrigation system use.
7. System Performance (Step 3):
• Inquire about the farmer's experiences with their irrigation system, including the water source
and perceived efficiency.

8. Maintenance and Operation (Step 4):

• Explore maintenance practices and operational challenges related to the irrigation system.
Document any specific issues and solutions.
9. Technological Integration (Step 5):
• Investigate the use of technology in the irrigation system. Discuss any plans for future
upgrades or technological advancements.
10. Water Management and Sustainability (Step 6):
• Gather information on water conservation practices and environmental sustainability efforts
related to irrigation.
11. Conclusion (Step 7):
• Summarize key findings and ask for any additional insights or recommendations the farmer
may have.

Post-Interview Analysis:
12. Transcription and Documentation:
• Transcribe the interview recordings (if applicable) and compile detailed notes, ensuring
accuracy in capturing the farmer's responses.
13. Data Categorization:
• Categorize data based on themes such as system type, challenges, innovations, and
sustainability practices for easy analysis.
14. Analysis and Report Generation:
• Analyze the collected data to identify patterns, trends, and common themes. Generate a
comprehensive report summarizing key findings.
15. Presentation or Discussion:
• Present the findings to the educational group, fostering discussion and reflection on the
insights gained from the interviews.

Continuous Improvement:
16. Feedback Mechanism:
• Collect feedback from students and interviewers to identify areas for improvement in the
interview process.
17. Iterative Refinement:
• Iterate and refine the interview methodology based on feedback, ensuring continuous
improvement for future engagements.
