In the context of Alternative Learning System where its program gives much focused on
eradicating illiteracy and lessening OSY, writing composition apart from all other constant problem
is one of the most identified critical and important issues that should be addressed by the
Department through its ALS Implementers. This is taking into consideration that ALS learners are
considered to be special in terms of culture of learning, modality of learning delivery not to mention
the learner’s socio-economic status, geographical location, physiological and psychological state
and behavior, which affects their learning and academic performance which standards should
conform to what is set by the Department to its individual level.
In this light, this study aimed to explore and identify the composition writing difficulties
encountered by Grade 11 SHS Students of Alternative Learning System General Santos City
Division that will serve as basis for enrichment and further plans to improve as well as provide
solutions to the problems identified concerning writing as well as the factors that caused these
problems. This is also to address and give solutions to these difficulties ahead of time in order for
them to prepare for the higher-level education wherein research and other higher-level areas will
be introduced.

The study aims to identify the common problems on writing of the grade 11 students of
Grade 11 SHS students of ALS.

Program WRITE
The Program WRITE of Alternative Learning System was created with the aim of eradicating
illiteracy and give more attention on the academic performance specifically on the writing skills of
Grade 11 ALS learners who have identified difficulty in writing composition. This program allows
learners to acquire needed and necessary knowledge on one of the most important macro skills in

the field of communication which serves to be one of the keys in achieving success. The activities
of the program are presented below.

Action ResearchMethodology
The researchers will use frequency counts to determine the number of writing problems
based on the surface (verbs, punctuations, noun etc) and global (sentence coherence,
organization etc). The aforementioned scheme was revised from the study of Ramos et.al (2020).
They will also use the purposive sampling for the respondents were purposely chosen by the
researchers. Moreover, the researchers will use weighted mean and the 5- point Likert scale,

adapted from the study of Saavedra et.al (2020) in determining if a particular indicator could be a
contributory factor to the composition writing difficulties of Grade 10 students. Also, in order to
verify the validity or trueness of the respondents’ answers on the survey, an interview will be
conducted.
Furthermore, after identifying the common composition writing difficulties of the students,
the researchers will then create a self- made activity module that will be validated by English
Master Teachers.

The researchers plan to disseminate and utilize the findings of the action research through
publishing the research in a division-wide scope and made the research available to public so that
other researchers will be able to used it as a reference for their future study.
