Grade 10

CHEMICAL BONDING

Activity 1: Understanding Ionic Bonding and the formation of ionic compounds

Instructions:

1. Download this document as a Word document.

2. All of your answers must be in blue ink.
3. Open 2 tabs on your computer: one with the Lab document and one for the simulation web
page.
4. Read carefully the Lab Word document.
5. Only include screenshots in the questions that you are asked. All screenshots must include the
date/time from your computer.
6. After completing all questions, SAVE the document and submit it to Toddle.

Evaluation: Students will receive a grade in the Lab Category based on their answers as evaluated
using Criteria D of the IB rubric.

Objectives:

1. Describe the formation of ionic compounds

2. Predict the type of bonding that will occur between given elements.
3. Determine the correct chemical formula and name for a compound.
4. To understand the properties of ionic compounds
5. Use of the ATL skill: Critical thinking in completing this lab assignment.
1. Open the simulation in your web browser.
Ionic bonding

2. Read slide 1, the introduction. Then click on the right arrow to move to slide 2.
3. Slide 2: After following the instructions on the page write a paragraph of about 50 words
describing what happened.

4. Slide 3: After following the instructions describe what happened in a paragraph of about 50
words.

5. Slides 5 to 8. After reading the information on the slides, summarize in your own words the
main information in a paragraph of about 50 to 100 words. Do NOT copy/paste from the
simulation; it must be in your own words.

6. Slides 9 to 13. After doing the simulation of the ionic bond between sodium and chlorine,
explain in a paragraph how the bond is formed, including a Screenshot from the simulation
with the Date/time.

7. Slides 14 to 20. After doing the simulation, explain what you have learned about ionic
compounds including a screenshot that illustrates what you explain in the paragraph (make
sure the screenshot is showing the date/time).

8. Slides 21 to 23. Explain the key idea you learn from this part of the simulation? Show a
screenshot with date and time.
9. Slide 24.
a. How many calcium ions are in the crystal?

b. How many fluoride ions are in the crystal?

c. What is the formula for the crystal? (make sure you use subscripts)

10. Slide 25, 26 Reflection- Write a paragraph of about 200 words.
