Get Started:
In the space provided, write your own thoughts about what you think science is.
What is science to you? How is science different in How can I take an active role in
biology? my own scientific discoveries?
“Science is about the pursuit and delving into the unknown.” Dr. Leroy Little Bear
“Science is curiosity in thoughtful action about the world and how it behaves.” NASA website
I like the quotes above because i have a very high curiosity drive to learn about whats around me.
for example since getting my drivers licence becoming very familer with combustion motors and
car mechanics. I think these quotes speck directly to this but with a focus on science.

Work on It 1: Indigenous and Western Sciences: Blending Perspectives
Once you have reviewed one or more of the lesson resources, answer these reflection questions:
The history behind this plant, and how protected they were between indigenous people. Also
how cooking the food changes the chemical make up and then the flavor.
western science enplanes exactly what is happening to the root when you cook it and indigenous
peoples did the same thing.
for example cooking the flower bulb. First nations community's might not have known
that cooking the food changes the chemical make up but both sciences used this
technique to change the taste.
Complete the following self-assessment to review the skills of science and to summarize which ones
you have the most experience with and which you will develop through this course.
Scientific Skills My own experience with these skills
2
Processing and analyzing data and information !
Evaluating !
Communicating !
What are some ways which you have developed these skills in the past? Give a few specific
examples (can be from science or other fields of knowledge).
A lot of these skills I have developed threw car mechanics. I think you use the scientific prosses a lot
here. like wanting to know something running texts and then seeing what results come out.
Using the chart provided in the lesson, write the function(s) of each system.
Digestive System Take in food(ingestion), digest food into smaller molecules and
absorb nutrients, remove indigestible food from the body (feces)
Excretory or Urinary System removes waste products from cellular metabolism (urea, water,
CO2), filters blood
Respiratory System takes in oxygen and removes carbon dioxide and water
Lymphatic System stores and carries WBC's that fight disease, collects excess fluid
and returns it to blood (2nd circulatory system reaches places
other ones can't between cells)
3
Nervous System gathers and interprets information, responds to information,
helps maintain homeostasis
Reproductive System allows organisms to reproduce which prevents their species from
going extinct
Choose any two of the 8 body systems from the previous page. Rewrite the functions and list the
Major Organs/parts in each system. Then describe how the systems are interconnected.
Functions and Organs of Body System 1 Functions and Organs of Body System 2
respiratory circulatory
fuction: takes in oxygen and removes function: transport materials to and from cells
carbon dioxide and water
main organ is the heart, arteries, veins,
main organ is the lungs, the trachea, the capillaries
diaphragm
4
The circulatory system brings blood to the lungs where the respiratory system transforms it back
into oxygen that gets pumped through the heart and back into the circulatory system.
STOP and submit the completed Lessons 1 and 2 pages to Assignment folder “(RA) Unit 1
Chapter 1 Lessons 1/2 Learning Guide” as a single PDF file. (Instructions for how to do this can
be found in the Lesson 2 Show It Section). Once marked, you will have access to the rest of the
chapter. You can find the Assignment folder in your Content page or the Assignments tab in your
top navigation bar. Once you have received feedback on your Learning Guide, you will automatically
be given access to the rest of the chapter lessons.
