THE LEARNING STRATEGIES AND HABITS AMONG GRADE 11

GENERAL ACADEMIC STRAND STUDENTS

CHAPTER 1
PROBLEM AND IT’S SETTING

INTRODUCTION

The process of obtaining the body of information and skills that

people are supposed to possess is known as education. A good education
fosters critical thinking and intellectual curiosity, all of which contribute to
lifelong learning. Today’s education is judged on its efficacy, quality, long
term viability and relevance.

What exactly is GAS? (General Academic Strand) is the most versatile

of the four strand in the Academic Track because students learn and
experience something from each one. GAS is primarily for students who are
unsure about which strand to pursue. These strategies and habits can help
GAS students excel academically and develop skills that will serve them well
in their future education and career pursuits General Academic Strand
(GAS) students are faced with challenging academic curriculum that
requires effective learning strategies and habits to excel. It explores the key
strategies and habits that can help GAS students succeed in their studies.
GAS is a versatile track that prepares students for a wide range of college
careers making it essential for them to develop strong study kills.

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Learning strategies are rules principle procedure intended to promote

learning and are typically relevant specialized leaving as learning
regulations, and policies (UNESCO ,n, d). These learning techniques include
convert and Meta cognitive and cognitive learning tools and effective,
motivational social and behavioral environmental/management. A robust
cognitive and constructive method, where students take charge of their
learning and make meaning of knowledge, is must successful in acquiring
and manipulating information (GROSSER 2020) by employing a combination
of these learning strategies that students can optimized their learning
experience, develop critical thinking skills, and achieve better academic
outcomes.

Learning strategies and habits of General Academic Strand (GAS)

students focuses on understanding the specific approaches and behaviors
that GAS students employ to enhance their learning experience. The General
Academic Strand is a track that is offered to senior high school students that
emphasizes academic subjects as Mathematics, Science, Social Science, and
Humanities. By understanding the learning strategies and habits of GAS
students, researchers can provide insights and recommendations to

LITERATURE REVIEW

This chapter discusses the literature review that includes data from
books, websites, journals, thesis and other researches that are related to
this research work.

RELATED LITERATURE

In the context of modern education, the investigation into the learning

strategies and habit of General Academic Strand (GAS) students takes on
paramount importance. GAS a diverse and interdisciplinary strand within
the K-12 system, present challenges and opportunities, both for the students
adapt their educators. It’s crucial to comprehend how GAS students adapt
their learning strategies and cultivate effective study habits, as this is
instrumental in guaranteeing their academic triumph and readiness for
higher education and job landscape. Through an in depth exploration of GAS
education, this research endeavors to illuminate the myriad approaches and
methods employed by GAS students to navigate their academic journey.

These insights prove invaluable not only for educators aiming to

customize instruction but also for policy makers seeking to bolster the
support mechanisms for GAS students. Ultimately, a comprehensive
examination of learning strategies and habits within the GAS strands will
contribute to the development of more personalized and efficient educational
system, is better in preparing students to confront the challenges of their
future. Most of the strands are specific to careers but the General Academic
Strand is best for those who still haven’t decided what course they will take.
GAS helps in choosing electives from different subject strands. This gives
students the more opportunity to explore their views and options and give
them a good mix of subject so they can make more firm decisions when it
comes to choosing an undergraduate degree in the future. It highlights the
importance of understanding and addressing students in learning strategies
and emotions to enhance their learning experiences. This study focuses on
learning strategies and their correlation with academic success.

The General Academic Strand (GAS) is a track offered to senior high

school students that provides a broad and rounded education in order to
excel in this strand, students need to develop effective learning strategies
and habits. This review aims to explore existing studies on the learning
strategies and habits of GAS students, highlighting their impact on academic
performance and overall success. It explores how habits shape students
behavior and how understanding and cultivating positive habits can
enhance learning outcomes. Their learning goals and characterized by active
processing of subject matter it also explores the balance between adhering to

established wrong study habits and maintain flexibility to adapt changes in

their learning environment.

RELATED STUDIES

Tan (2019) found that students rarely used surface or strategic

learning strategies, while they frequently used deep larning strategies, but at
a moderate level, thus exhibiting less interest in reading and solving word
and numeric problems in math. Diaz et al. (2019) also revealed that studying
in a group, learning through graphic expression and focusing on information
are commonly used by college students.

According to Patriz Biliran (2018) GAS is perfect for students who are
still unsure about what way they will take in college because GAS students
are required to pick electives from other academic strands, they are expected
to be skilled in different subjects. Usually these students must be a “Jack of
Trades” type of individual or simply those who can do virtual in everything.
Learning habits in the General Academic strand 2.1 time management is
crucial for students in the GAS due to the demanding nature of their course
work studies indicates that students who manage time efficiently by setting
priorities, creating schedules, and avoiding procrastination experience
reduced stress level and improved academic performance.

In addition to identify and classify the different learning strategies

that the students employ, a number of preferences among students when
adopting learning strategies. Vega-Hernandez et al. (2017) explored the
differences in learning strategies utilization among students according to
their age, gender and found that male students preferred learning support
strategies more frequently. The subject area has also been found to have an
effect on the use of learning strategies. For example, Muelas and Navarro
(2015) investigates the student strategy use in three main subject areas:
language, math and social sciences. Juste and Lopez (2010) identified seven
learning strategies that include the planning and reinforcement of self-
esteem, classification, repetition, cooperation, deduction, inference and
prediction. According to Richard, Platt, Platt (1998, p. 261) learning
strategies is “Intentional behavior and thoughts that learners make use of
during learning in order to help them understood, learn or remember new
information. These may include focusing on certain aspects of new
information, analyzing and organizing information.
