Teacher Report

Hello, my name is Nicole Bendig. I am in my third year pursuing an Elementary

Education bachelor's degree with an endorsement in Special Education. I am from Chicago,
Illinois and I hope to go back there and teach after I get my degree from Loras. I am tutoring
Braxton, over the past couple of weeks Braxton and I have strengthened our relationship with
each other all while helping him with his literacy skills. He is a very fun and energetic student
who knows how to make everyone laugh.
Over the past couple of weeks, I have given Braxton assessments to see his level for
certain skills. I gave him the PAST Assessment which stands for Phonological Awareness
Screening Test. This assessment was divided into four sections addressing basic syllables, onset-
rime, basic phoneme, and advanced phoneme. Braxton scored an 8/12 on the basic syllable
section, which is below grade level. He then scored a 10/10 on the onset-rime section which was
on track and scored a 3/10 on the basic phoneme section which was below grade level. We did
not do the advanced phoneme section because Braxton's score on the previous section needed to
be higher to keep administering the assessment.
Another assessment I gave Braxton was the QPS Assessment which stands for Quick
Phonics Screener. This is testing his knowledge of phonics. He got through six skills on this
screener before we had to stop due to his scores. He did well on the first two skill sets which
were focused on letter names and letter sounds. He got a little tripped up with the nonsense
words and reading the sentences but I also think that is because he likes to fly through things. He
also did very well on the diagraphs in the fourth skill. Task A of the fifth set went amazing, he
went 10/10 reading the CVCC and CCVC words. However, on task B of the fifth set, he
struggled to read the sentences. Then for the sixth skill set, he struggled reading the silent e
words in the sentences.
For intervention for Braxton, I will work on both his phonics and phonological
awareness. I will continue to use the Orton Gillingham lesson plans because I have seen an
improvement in his spelling lists from the beginning of tutoring to now. I also want to stress
reading the decodable books with him to increase his fluency and use the information we just
learned in the OG lessons to be applied while he is reading. Repetition is very beneficial for
Braxton and so as I continue to work with him, I will stress the importance of the spelling lists
and especially the visual and auditory drills.
