“Research is formalized curiosity.

It is poking and prying with a

purpose.”
Zora Neale Hurston

Intelligence can be defined as the adaptation of an environment to suit needs, which is

why humans can be acknowledged as the most ‘intelligent’ of species. Humans observe, identify,

plan and then effect change. Humans are ‘intuitive’ scientist-- always asking questions and

testing theories about themselves, events, the environment and the world around them. Our views

– personal, social, community and worldwide and our own identities are socially constructed

through our own theory. We research in order to understand society and social processes, as well

as to test and or create theories in order that we are better able to inform about social action and

potentially improve social conditions.

EXPLORE: Activity #1

Activity Title: Up Next!

Learning Target: Enhance one’s vocabulary for the unique terms known as jargons
Reference Title: Literary Devices

Main Idea

Reading improves vocabulary; it shows you the places you have not seen and widens
your imagination. It gives you wisdom to discover other things. There are times where the words
used are unfamiliar to us that only experts can understand better.

Jargon is a literary term that is defined as the use of specific phrases and words in a
particular situation, profession, or trade. These specialized meanings are accepted and
understood in that field. Jargons are considerably present in research depending on the
profession; this is one of the technical terms used in research.

Directions: Arrange the given letters to form a word. Analyze the picture to get a hint.

It’s Discussion
Time!

Research is defined as a systematic and scientific process to answer questions about facts
and relationship between facts. It is an activity seeking answer to unanswered question.

Technical terms are essential part of all technical and scientific writing. Each field and
specialty typically uses a vocabulary that relays a variety of specialized concepts through
technical language.

Here are the basic research terminologies:

 Objectives of the Study

- It enumerates the direction to investigate the variables under study, expressed in
declarative sentences.

 Statement of the Problem (SOP)

- It is used in a research work as a claim that outlines the problem addressed by a study

 Significance of the Study

- It discusses the importance of the study to the society, the country, the government,
the community, the institution, the agency concerned, the curriculum planners and
developers and to the researchers.

 Review of Related Literature and Studies

- Related literature includes research findings, published or unpublished theories and
principles formulated by experts or authorities in some field or discipline; and ideas
or opinions of experts contained in books, pamphlets, magazines and periodicals.
- It should be organized thematically to conform to the specific problems.
- It should be synthesized such that evidence from all the studies reviewed would get
an overall understanding of the state of knowledge in the problem area.

 Methodology
- This part of the paper specifies the procedures and strategies that will be used in the
research.

 Research Locale
- It describes in brief the place where the study is conducted.
 Respondents of the Study
- It describes the target population and the sample frame.

English 10 | Lesson 1: Technical Terms Used in Research 4 of 11

 Data Collection
- It is the part of the paper where the researcher narrates the procedure of data
gathering.

 Data Analysis
- This part of the paper discusses the statistics to be used in analyzing the gathered
data.

 Results and Discussions

- The gathered data are presented in tables and paragraphs; the manner of presentation
is based on the order presented in the SOP.

 Conclusion
- Based on the results gathered, it summarizes the points of evidence and its
implications

 Recommendations
- From the results, the researcher proposes suggestions for improvement.

PARTS OF AN ACTION RESEARCH

I. Introduction

1. The researcher should describe the existing and prevailing problem situation based on
his/her experience. This scope may be global, national, regional and local.

2. The researcher should give strong justification for selecting such research problem in
his/her capacity as a researcher, being a part of the organization or systems and the desire
and concern to improve the systems.

3. The researcher should link and relate the background of the study to the proposed
research problem.

A. Objectives of the Study

B. Statement of the Problem

1. There should be an introductory statement which reflects the main problem of the
study.

2. Sub-problem should be stated in such a way that it is not answerable by either yes, no,
when and where.

English 10 | Lesson 1: Technical Terms Used in Research 5 of 11

3. Sub-problems should include all the independent and moderate variables which are
reflected in the conceptual framework.

4. Sub–problems should be arranged in logical order and extensive in coverage and must
be mutually exclusive in its dimensions.

5. If the research is quantitative, avoid the “how” questions.

C. Significance of the Study

1. This section describes the contributions of the study to knowledge. This could be in
the form of new knowledge in the field, a check on the major findings of other
studies, a check on the validity of findings in a different population, a check on trends
over time and a check on the other findings using different methodology.

2. It discusses the importance of the study to the society, the country, the government,
the community, the institution, the agency concerned, the curriculum planners and
developers and to the researchers.

3. It expounds on the study’s probable impact to education, science, technology, on-

going researchers and etc.

D. Definition of Terms

1. This part of the paper lists the important terms used in the study. These terms are
operationally defined. They are arranged in alphabetical order.

II. Review of Related Literature and Studies

1. Related literature includes research findings, published or unpublished theories and

principles formulated by experts or authorities in some field or discipline; and ideas or
opinions of experts contained in books, pamphlets, magazines and periodicals.

2. It should be written in terms of the purpose of the study.

3. It should give more weight to studies considered more authoritative as evaluated and
should give reference to primary rather than secondary sources.

4. It should be organized thematically to conform to the specific problems.

5. It should be synthesized such that evidence from all the studies reviewed would get an
overall understanding of the state of knowledge in the problem area.

III. Methodology

A. Research Locale

English 10 | Lesson 1: Technical Terms Used in Research 6 of 11

1. This discusses the place or setting of the study. It describes in brief the place where
the study is conducted. Only important features which have the bearing on the present
study are included.

B. Respondents of the Study

1. This describes the target population and the sample frame

2. It specifies the sampling technique used and how the sample size is determined.

C. Data Collection

D. Data Analysis

IV. Results and Discussions

V. Conclusions

FIRM-UP: Activity #2

Activity Title: Apply ‘em!

Learning Target: Resolve conflicts in the workplace and in the community
Reference Title: Practical English 10
Author: Raymundo, H. and Go, R.

Main Idea

The main purpose of research is to inform action, gather evidence for theories, and
contribute to developing knowledge in a field of study. It’s a means to understand issues and
increase public awareness.

Directions: Reflect on issues around you (at home, in school, in the community,
relationships, etc). List three (3) issues that you think can be better resolved
through research. In a short paragraph, discuss the issues you have chosen.

DEEPEN: Activity #3

Activity Title: Let’s Try This!

Learning Target: Apply the technical term used in research to compose a research title
Reference Title: Slideshare.net
Author: Malicse, B.

Main Idea

Terminology helps students comprehend the main message of the research to transmit the
content more effectively. It will be easier if the researcher is familiar with the mechanics in
forming a good research title.

Guidelines in formulating research title:

1. The title needs to be very specific in nature.

2. In spite of being specific, it should also have the expressive power to show the entire
scale of the research study in those few words.
3. It should tell the total nature of the subject.
4. It needs to be very definite and clear.
5. The title needs to be attractive and interesting enough to catch the attention of the readers.

Directions: Formulate a research title using the above guidelines. From the three issues you
have identified from the previous activity (pp 8-9), choose one topic that is
relevant in the present situation and can be used as your research topic.

Criteria

Relevance of the Topic 5 points

Uniqueness of the Topic 5 points
Appropriateness of Elements 5 points
TOTAL 15 points

VALUES INTEGRATION

Directions: Reflect on the given quotation and relate it to the lesson. Write your answer inside
the box.

“Research teaches a man to admit he is wrong and to be proud of the fact that he does so,
rather than try with all his energy to defend an unsound plan because he is afraid that
admission of error is a confession of weakness when rather it is a sign of strength.”
H.E. Stocher
