SONGKRAN
Songkran is a festival that was derived from the Sanskrit word "Sankranti" which means "passing or
approaching,” and there are several activities that people do in this festival. The celebration normally lasts three
days and occurs in the middle of April. The core of Songkran are the water-related activities that symbolize
purification, renewal, and the washing away of misfortunes from the previous year. Participants engage in
friendly water fights, dousing each other with water guns or even buckets, as a way to cleanse and bring good
luck for the upcoming year. Traditional rituals are also a fundamental part of Songkran, with people visiting
temples to make merit, offering food to monks, and seeking blessings for prosperity and success. Additionally,
cultural performances and traditional games are organized to commemorate the New Year and showcase the
rich cultural heritage of the region. Songkran is a time of immense joy and togetherness, where people come
together to celebrate the turning of the year, create cherished memories, and embrace the spirit of renewal and
optimism.
