Comparative Education Reflection #2

The chapter points to how important diversity is in education and how as

educators

we must learn to harness it. A diverse classroom is a classroom that will help our
students

get a better understanding of themselves, and society. It will expose them to different i

ideas and beliefs. This synergy in the classroom can lead to the creation of future
leaders

that can craft better businesses, programs, and policies for the country.

There is no denying our classrooms are truly diverse and we as educators must

recognize this and create a space where this diversity can be harnessed and be used to

create a better learning environment for all. A learning environment that is inclusive,

where ideas are allowed to flourish, and where open communication is promoted.

I have been fortunate enough to be exposed to a multitude of ideas, beliefs, and

cultures in my classroom. I believe this exposure inside the classroom has shaped me

tremendously both as a person and as an educator. My perspective of society definitely

has been influenced by the numerous interactions I have had in my classes.

There was a time where I was not really exposed to the idea of how a person

wanted to be identified. I can still remember the day when I was calling out the names of

my students during the first day of classes, once I finished the roll call a student

approached me an informed me how he wanted to be called in class. I called him by his

female name, and he informed me of the name that he wanted to be called. I could see

how sure he was of what he said and so I apologized. From then I started calling him by

the name he wanted to use. That initial interaction and acceptance of his name and who
he was probably significant to him because he did quite well in my class. After that

interaction, I would always make sure that I call each student by the name they wanted

to be called because I wanted them to feel and understand that they can be seen, and

they matter. I feel that ensuring a learning environment that is inclusive promotes better

learning for all.

This is just a single interaction from the multitude of interactions I have had
inside

the classroom. These interactions have shaped how I approach my profession and how
I

live out my life. It opened my mind to various beliefs, ideas, and cultures. I believe that

educators must learn to harness this diversity to truly maximize learning and create
better

leaders which can lead to the creation of a better society.
