3. Discuss the characteristics of each volcanoes.
II. CONTENT
A. Subtopic Classification of Volcano
B. Concepts Classification of Volcanoes according to Frequency
Frequency. How frequent the eruption is?
1. Active volcanoes- are those which erupted within the last
50 years or so.
Potentially active volcano (DORMANT)- Volcano that has
erupted and expected to erupt again.
2. Inactive volcanoes- haven’t erupted in the past 10,000
years, but which is expected to erupt again.
3. Extinct - would be one that nobody expects to ever erupt
again.
Shape. Determined by the type of eruption, magma and
materials erupted by a volcano.
1. Shield – Its magma is rich in iron and magnesium and
is very fluid.
The lava tends to flow at great distances.
The flowing lava gives the volcano the shape of
a gently sloping mountain
Eruptions of shield volcanoes are mild and can
occur several times.
2. Composite- Its magma is rich in silica and much thicker
than magma from a shield volcano. Gases get trapped
inside this thicker magma.
Eruptions from composite volcanoes can be
