2.2. Discuss the problem/s in the film.

The conflicts in the film are systemic racism, police brutality, the cycle of violence,
no freedom to speak up, and the system's unjust response to murdered black people.
This cycle of violence usually begins with an instance of violence, such as a
shooting or physical assault, and then the court turns a blind eye leading to revenge and
retaliation, which in turn leads to more violence. Like how the white police officer who
shot Khalil (Starr’s childhood best friend) was exonerated and Khalil himself was shown
to be the cause of his own death; and how the grand jury and the court concluded the
results that caused the black people to protest.

2.3. How did the characters face the problems/struggles in the movie?

At first, they chose to protest out of hatred and anger, which led to extreme
violence and chaos that resulted in many people being hurt and injured. This also
results in a young kid, Sekani (Starr's younger brother) pointing a gun at King out of
hatred and fear that they will hurt his family.
That is when they started to change, everyone spoke up about King’s bad deeds
and managed to get him imprisoned. The neighborhood began to rebuild. They start
building courage. The courage to speak up for their rights, and to complain about the
unjust response to their lives. Starr, the main character, takes up the courage to fight, to
realize their life's worth, that telling the truth to the world is not wrong at all. They face
the problems by breaking the cycle of violence by not being controlled by hate, instead
they will fight for Khalil's right to live and for the black people's lives. They face the
problems by accepting themselves, embracing who they are, and cutting off the people
who made them wrong. And even if Khalil still does not get justice, the black community
and many others will continue to fight for his justice forever because they will not be
quiet anymore.

2.4. Discuss briefly the social/political/racial problems in the movie.

The people, police, and the court are unfair. Some people pity the white police
officer who murdered Khalil, and some blame Khalil for his own death, like Hailey, who
stated that the brush Khalil was holding could have been mistaken as a gun and it was
a valid reason to shoot him. The other is when Carlos, Starr's Uncle stated that he
would shoot if he saw black people going for a gun, but he would say "Put your hands
up" if he saw white people going for a gun.
Another thing is on how the grand jury and the court finalize the result; they did not
charge the white police officer for his crime even when Starr reveals everything that
happened. This shows how biased the system is. They see the color of black people as
a dangerous weapon. And they will not take action when black people are in danger or
killed, instead, they will blame black people even though they are the innocent ones.

2.6. As a student of Purposive Comm., how can you solve the problem in the
movie? Share your views/express your views/suggestions.

Honestly, as a student, I do not really know how. Because to solve the problem,
everyone around us needs to work together and empathize with the situation of black
people, they need to understand the value of black people lives. But if I can help, I will
protest. Even if it hurts me or everyone judges me for what I do. It is scary but I want to
do the right thing. If I were Starr, the main character. I will not hesitate to reveal the truth
immediately, because my friend is more important than anything else, my friend's life
was lost, the police may go to jail but the dead will never come back. This is all I can do
for him, for my friend, I do not care if they think I am a drug dealer, I will let them drug
test me or find any evidence that I use drugs. I will stand, for myself the witness, for my
family, for black people, and for my best friend Khalil, the victim.
