Present three (3) cases/stories featuring moral agents at different

stages. Identify the stages of the agents in each of the three (3) cases

Case 1.
Hannah witnessed a crime where in a person murdered someone, and the murderer is her
father. After a few days, the police discovered the incident, during their investigation they get
found someone`s fingerprint on the victim`s garment, the fingerprint matched his father`s
fingerprint. The investigation is continued by the police, but they cannot find other evidence to
prove that his father is the killer, because the area where the murder happened doesn`t have
security cameras and her father said that he didn`t kill the victim and he just defended his self.
The court will decide to dismiss the case in the next few days if no witness shows and tell what
really happened. If Hannah decides to ignore the case and not show herself as the witness, her
father will not go into prison, but the victim will not get justice.
After thinking the entire day, she decided to show herself as a witness and testified to what
really happened to the crime. Her father is sentenced to go to jail for 20 years. When she is
asked why she turned herself as a witness and testified to the crime even if her father is the
murderer and it is more likely that her father will go to prison, she answered “I did this because
I know that what my father did is wrong, I love my father so much, but for me, he needs to face
the consequences of what he did. Even though we have a deep relationship, I value life more
than relationship, because taking someone`s life is not acceptable.”

In this case, I will say that the moral agent, or Hannah is in the stage 6 of Moral Development.
Because even though her father is the one who murdered the victim, and they have a deep
relationship and they are related by the blood, in fact Hannah is his father`s own blood and
flesh, she still decided to be a witness and testified against him. There is a saying that “Blood is
thicker than water”, but our moral agent Hannah didn`t followed this principle, and instead she
followed what she think is right even though people may question her decision.
Case 2.
Elisha is held as a hostage of one of the most wanted people in the world when the criminal is
found and cornered by the authorities. The authorities tried to communicate and negotiate
with the criminal, but the criminal doesn`t show interest of having a negotiation with them or
even surrendering. The criminal threatened the police that he will kill Elisha if they make a
suspicious move. When a skilled policeman tried to sneak to the criminal to unarm him, the
criminal saw it and aim the gun to Elisha`s head, the criminal is about to be shoot her in the
head when they heard a loud noise. Suddenly the criminal collapsed in the floor. What
happened is that a sniper shot the criminal, the sniper is aiming to the criminal`s hand but he
missed and accidentally aim at the criminal`s heart. The criminal luckily didn`t die at that very
moment and was rushed to a hospital. The criminal is in a critical condition and he needs to
undergo a heart surgery immediately, Elisha is one of the best surgeons in the world, and
during that time there is no other people that are skilled enough to operate to the criminal
other than her. The government of the country sent an order that is allowing Elisha to not
perform the surgery because it doesn`t matter for them anymore because the criminal killed so
many people in many different countries.
But Elisha decided to perform the surgery and save the live of the criminal instead. The surgery
went well, but many people are not happy because they are saying that Elisha just allowed a
person who murdered many people pay what he has done. But Elisha defended herself and said
“Even though I am held by this man as his hostage, and this man killed so many people, I will
still operate on him, not because it is my job as a doctor, but because I believe that saving
people`s lives is my calling, I will still operate on this man even if he is the most evil person in
the world or not, even if I am going to be paid or not, because I believe that every people`s lives
matters and that man`s live is on my hand.

In this case, I will also say that our moral agent Elisha, is in the stage 6 of Moral Development.
My reason is that, after everything that the man did, killing people, and even holding her as a
hostage, she still choose to operate on the man. And from her answer, you will see that she
thinks about the people`s equality, no matter how good or bad the man that she is operating to
she believes that the man still deserves to live, and the man`s life is on her hand. I can also see
on her that she holds onto her own principle even if other people around her doesn`t think in
the same way as her.
Case 3.
Maxine has a best friend, and her best friend is her brother`s wife. One time, Maxine saw her
brother cheating with another woman. Now, she doesn`t know what to do because she is
choosing between her brother and best friend. She is closer to her best friend than her brother,
if she decides to hide the truth from her best friend just so that her relationship with her
brother will remain the same, it will hurt her best friend if she found out about her husband
cheating to her. If she choose to tell her best friend the truth, her best friend will still get hurt
but will find out the truth instead, and her relationship with her brother will be ruined if she do
this.
After thinking of what she will do and who she will choose between the two, she decided to tell
her best friend the truth. Her reason why she did this is because it is wrong according to the
law, and we need to follow the law, that`s why she tell her best friend about this so that her
brother will get punished.

In this case, our moral agent Maxine, is in the 4th stage of Moral Development. Because she
what she did is just to follow the law, she doesn`t have a deeper reason why she did this, and
just said that she needs to follow the law.
