TITLE : SPLICE

Splice is the story of two scientists, who are also involved with one another, hard at work trying
to crack all manner of genetic codes. They are fusing the genetic material of various types of life
in order to create an entirely new organism that can then produce valuable proteins used to
fight diseases. The smitten biologists are confident that their work is on the right track until
tragedy strikes at a convention and their parent company threatens to pull the plug. In
desperation, they decide to cross the ethical point of no return and add human DNA to the mix.
The result of their experiment is Dren, an amalgamation of several animals but predominantly
exhibiting distinctly human features. Their excitement turns to horror when Dren displays
erratic, violent behavior. Have they made the breakthrough of the century or a terrible,
irreversible mistake?
Geneticists Clive (Adrien Brody) and Elsa (Sarah Polley) specialize in creating hybrids of species.
When they propose the use of human DNA, their pharmaceutical company bosses forbid it,
forcing them to conduct experiments in secret. The result is Dren, a creature with amazing
intelligence and physical attributes. At first, Dren exceeds their wildest dreams, but as she
begins to grow at an accelerated rate, she threatens to become their worst nightmare.
Genetic engineers Clive Nicoli and Elsa Kast hope to achieve fame by successfully splicing
together the DNA of different animals to create new hybrid animals for medical use.
Two young rebellious scientists are told by their employers to halt groundbreaking work that
has seen them produce new creatures with medical benefits by splicing together multiple
organisms' DNA. They decide to secretly continue their work, but this time splicing in human
DNA.
Clive Nicoli and Elsa Kast are scientists of the Newstead Pharmaceutics researching the splice of
DNA from different animals to form new genetic beings and find medical benefits to mankind.
They have just created the hybrid Ginger and Fred and now they intend to join together human
DNA to alter the genetic structure of their experiment. When the senior management calls off
their experiment, they decide to secretly proceed and they generate a life form with human
characteristics. They call it Dren and Elsa is very fond of their creation that grows up fast and
showing intelligence. When the company shutdown their experiment, they bring Dren to Elsa's
abandoned farm and the scientists raise Dren like a daughter. But when it reaches adulthood,
the sex drive of Dren is activated and Clive and Elsa learn that they have a serious problem to
resolve.

WHEN WAS AIRED IN THE MOVIE HOUSE?

The film opened on June 4, 2010 in wide release to a $7.4 million opening weekend in 2,450
theaters, averaging $3,014 per theater. Splice was released on DVD and Blu-ray on October 5,
2010, in the US and on November 29, 2010, in the UK.

REFLECTION
I liked Splice a lot, and I feel I’m right on the cusp of loving it. For me, Splice represents exactly
what Science-Fiction is supposed to be. There is a stigma, and perhaps at one point I held this
same belief, that Sci-Fi is a juvenile, plastic genre that produces little more than spectacular
effects and mindless fantasy. But great Sci-Fi takes a very tangible societal issue or question and
uses technology to emphasize the universality and timelessness of those issues. The interesting
thing about Splice is that it is less interested in examining the obvious moral quandary of
cloning as it is the question of abortion. At the beginning of the film, our protagonists Clive
(Adrien Brody) & Elsa (Sarah Polley) discuss the possibility of having a child and while he is
strongly for the idea, she is staunchly opposed. The argument appears to placed on the back
burner in the wake of Dren’s arrival, but if you listen closely to their conversations about what
to do about Dren and how to handle the situation, they are echoing the conversations of a
young couple struggling with the abortion decision; their actions and the shift in their
relationship are also indicative of such a decision.
