Subject-Verb Agreement

D. LESSON PROPER

Do you have any idea what a Subject-Verb

Agreement is?

Subject-verb agreement means that if the Subject is

singular, the verb must also be singular and if the
subject is plural, the verb must also be plural.

A noun ending in s is often plural.

A verb ending in s is usually singular.

For example:
The lawyer gives her advice
The lawyers give her advice.

Another example,
The student likes to play volleyball.

In the given example, will you underline the subject

in the sentence? Raise your hand if you want to
answer.
Yes, Anna

Very good, the student is the subject in the sentence.

How about the verb, can you identify the verb in the
sentence? Encircle it.
Mark, will you encircle the verb in the sentence?

Very good, the word likes is the verb in the sentence.

Now, let’s proceed to the Rules on Subject-Verb

Agreement

Rule 1: Two or more subjects joined by “and” are

considered plural and require a verb form
without an “s.”

a. Example: Jan, John, and Bob walk to the store.

In the given example, encircle the verb. Raise
your hand if you want to answer.
Yes, Jenny.

Very good, the verb in the sentence is walk. How

about the subjects, will you underline them?
Mary, underline the subjects in this sentence.

Excellent! In the given example we have 3

subjects.
Let’s proceed to our next examples.

b. Bob and his brothers walk to the store.

In this example, Rose will you encircle the verb?

Very good! Now, will you also underline the
subject.
Excellent! You may now sit.
Let’s proceed to our last example.

c. The butterfly and the walking stick are insects.

In this example, John, will you underline the verb

and encircle the subject?

Very good.
Do you have any questions regarding this rule?
Okay, now let’s proceed to the next rule.

Rule 2: If plural subjects are joined by “or,” “nor,”

or “but”, the verb must only agree with the
subject that is closest to it.

Mark, will you please read the examples?

a. Example: Either Bob or his brother walks to the

store.
b. Neither Bob nor his brothers walk to the store.

Thank you, Mark.

Class, if you encounter this kind of sentence

remember this rule. What is rule number 2 again?

Excellent! Now let’s proceed to our last rule.

Rule 3: Disregard intervening words. A phrase or

clause between the subject and the verb does not
change the number of the subject.

a. Example: A box of paper clips is on the table.

(The verb is agrees with the subject box, not with the
paper clips.)
b. The children in my class learn fast.
c. The clouds on the horizon are fluffy.

Exception: All pronouns obey the subject-verb

agreement rule except for I and you. Even though
they are singular, they always take a plural verb.

Example: I work. You work. He works. We work.

They work.

Recognizing a singular or plural subject is easy. Take

a look at the chart below to see examples of singular
and plural subjects.
