Name of the game – BATAWEL

Objectives of the game - BATAWEL


: Players carry a pole loaded with bundles of palay through their shoulder racing one
after the other to the finish line.

Introduction/history of the game


: Batawel (Rice-stalk Relay Race) is a group race game patterned after the work of
farmers carrying the harvested rice stalks from the fields. It is often played during
town and provincial fiestas and is always the event in these occasions.

Mechanics of the game


1. Batawel has 2 stations. Each station has a member of each team.
2. Each team shall be given a batawel which shall be 1.5 meters in length. Each player
shall carry 10 bundles of palay weighing a total of 20 kilos.
3. Players carry a pole loaded with bundles of palay at both ends, racing one after the
other to the finish line.
4. A player shall carry his load upon his shoulder and transfer it to the waiting receiver
at the next station.
5. The player shall go beyond the line before transferring the load to the waiting
runner.

RULES
1. A player whose load falls to the ground shall stop, fix his load, and then continue
the race from the drop point.
2. When a player finishes his turn, he shall proceed to a designated area at the back of
the player.

Flow of the game

We, the facilitators of the game Batawel, gather the participants in a designated area.
We explained the mechanics of the game to the players before we began, and we also
demonstrated to them how to play the batawel and reminded them that there might be
a dangerous situations, we therefore disallowed them from acting or speaking in an
improper manner and encouraged them to consider their own safety first.Though we
encountered some problems, we made sure that all of the participants enjoyed the
game. The overall flow aims to create a dynamic and memorable experience for
everyone involved.

The learning outcomes for learning the BATAWEL game include:
