Today's children spend significant time in front of screens due to growing up in a technology-focused world. They are comfortable with devices from a young age and use them to play, communicate, learn, and socialize as it is all they have known. Consumerism and advertising also expose children to wanting the latest devices. While screens occupy children when parents work long hours, the increasing screen time risks negative health and behavioral effects that parents often do not consider.

Why do children spend so much time in front of screens?
In our day and age, it is without doubt that we lead a high-tech
lifestyle. Fifty years ago no one could imagine that every house would own 2 or 3 computers, that every person would have a least one smartphone, that most people would have an internet access 24/7. Life has changed drastically due to the advanced technological breakthroughs that have been successful during the second half of the 20th century. Therefore, it is only logical that all this change has played an important role in the life of children as well. But why is it that children are so at ease with high-tech devices?
Today’s children are extremely acquainted with technology. It comes
natural to them from a very early stage in their lives to use different high-tech gadgets which perform various tasks. Tasks which are a complete puzzle for some adults, especially for elderly people.
Consumerism and advertising combined with all aspects of everyday
life connected with technology make children somehow addicted to having all kinds of costly state-of-the-art devices at hand. From smartphones to games consoles, tablets and PCs. What do they have in common? A screen. And to be honest children seem to spend a lot of hours in front of these screens. Why? They like them, they are used to them, they can’t imagine life without them. It is the way they play, communicate, learn the news, or socialize. Today’s children are not aware of a world without the Internet or social media. They learn what is fashionable via Instagram influencers, they make new friends through social media, they listen to music in YOUTUBE, watch films on TV platforms and play online games. All these happen in a fast paced world where parents work extremely long hours to make ends meet and children spend more time alone than they did fifty years ago. So, it is only normal to be allowed the use of tech devices so that they can stay focused and safe from other dangers. Unfortunately this happens without taking into consideration that screen time will become even longer as time passes and children become more addicted to that kind of life. Nor parents understand that screens become part of their life with sometimes serious side effects to their health and behavior.
