Homogeneous Linear Differential Equation

1. Cautchy’s Equation- (a0x2D2 + a1xD + a2)y = Q(x)

2. Legendre’s Equation- (a0(ax+b)2D2 + a1(ax+b)D + a2)y = Q(x)

A. Process to solve Cautchy’s Equation:

I. Let x= ez => z= log(x)
II. Let xD= ϴ, x2D2= ϴ(ϴ-1), x3D3= ϴ(ϴ-1)( ϴ-2), …
[D= d/dx, ϴ= d/dz]
Then, find C.F., P.I. and form the general equation y.
B. Process to solve Legendre’s Equation:
I. Let (ax+b)= ez => z= log(ax+b)
II. Let (ax+b)D= ϴ, (ax+b)2D2= ϴ(ϴ-1), (ax+b)3D3= ϴ(ϴ-1)( ϴ-2), …
[D= d/dx, ϴ= d/dz]
Then, find C.F., P.I. and form the general solution.

Solving a pair of One-Degree Linear Differential Equation:

1. Differentiate any one of the equation and cancel out any one of the
dependent variables.
2. Form a differential equation.
3. Then, find the C.F., P.I. and form the general solution.
4. Find out the value of the remaining dependent variable.
