Course Description

This 3-unit course focuses on the characteristics of criminal law, the nature of felonies, stages of execution, circumstances affecting criminal liability, persons
criminally liable; the extent and extinction of criminal liability as well as civil liability of the offender, as well as understanding of penalties in criminal law, their nature
and theories, classes, crimes, habitual delinquency, juvenile delinquency, the Indeterminate Sentence Law and the Probation Law. The course covers Book 1 (Art. 1-
113) of the Revised Penal Code and related laws.

Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the student is expected to:

1. Define and explain Criminal Law, felonies and other related concepts;
2. Discuss as well as explain the sources of Criminal Law;
3. Explain the general principles of criminal law
4. Correlate criminal law with the Fundamental Law as well as the laws related;
5. Elucidate the constitutional rights of persons and the statutory rights of the accused;
6. Discuss the various circumstances attendant to the act or omission resulting to a felony;
7. Distinguish various terms, concepts, doctrines and principles of criminal law;
8. Describe the persons who are criminally liable; and
9. Explain the concepts of felonies.
10. The above objectives are to be achieved through a process involving readings, lectures, class discussions and various written exercises.

Lecture An organized oral presentation of subject matter.

Advanced Reading/Study/Research Advanced reading, study, and research enable the students to have an advance knowledge on a particular topic thus
making it easier for them to understand and participate during the discussion.
Library/Online research This involves the systematic gathering of information in order to write a paper, create a presentation, or complete a
project. The students should also do their own research to add up what they have already learned.

Quizzes Tests what has been learnt and the extent of the students’ knowledge on a particular topic. Often held at the beginning of
a topic or session.
Oral Recitation To adequately prepare the students for every class session, recitations will be conducted wherein they will be tested as
regards their understanding of the procedural rules the well-settled legal and doctrinal principles on the subject matter,
the applicable jurisprudence, and how they are applied to hypothetical situations that closely resemble real factual
situations.
