Part B (1 X 5 = 5)

(1) A compound steel tube consists of a steel tube of 170 mm external diameter and 10 mm
thickness and an outer brass tube of 190 mm external diameter and 10 mm thickness. The two
tubes are of the same length. The compound tube carries an axial load of 1MN. Find the
stresses and the load carried by each tube.. Length of each tube is 0.15 m. Take E b = 100 GPa
and Es = 200 GPa .
Part C (1 X 10 = 10)
2.A horizontal girder which is freely supported at its ends has a span of 9 m, supports a
uniformly distributed load of 20kN/m run over the whole span and also two concentrated
loads of 30kN and 40kN at 6m and 7.5m respectively from the left support as shown in
Figure . Draw the shear force and bending moment diagrams and state the values of
maximum shear force and bending moment.

3. A copper bar 80 mm in diameter is placed within a steel tube 100 mm external diameter and
80 mm internal diameter of exactly the same length. The two pieces are rigidly fixed together
by two pins 20 mm in diameter , one at each end passing through the bar and tube. Calculate
the stresses induced in the copper bar , steel tube and pins if the temperature of the combination
is raised by 60/°C. Est= 210 GPa and Ec = 105 GPa steel αs = 12x10-6 /°C and αc = 16 x10-6
/°C.
