Assignment-II

Q.1. What do you understand by consistency and inconsistency of system of linear equations?
Give the criteria for consistency and inconsistency for both homogenous and non-homogenous
systems. Also discuss the criteria for getting unique and infinitely many solutions.

Q.2. Do you agree with the statement “A homogenous system of linear equations is always
consistent” ? Justify

Q.3. Determine the values of 𝑚 and 𝑘 for which the system

𝑥+𝑦+𝑧 = 3

𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 𝑚𝑧 = 5

𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 4𝑧 = 𝑘

is consistent.

Ans. 𝑚 ≠ 4 & 𝑘 = 5

Q.4. Show that system of linear equations

2𝑥 + 2𝑦 − 3𝑧 = 1

4𝑥 + 4𝑦 + 𝑧 = 2

6𝑥 + 6𝑦 − 𝑧 = 3

has infinite many solutions.

Q.5. Test the consistency of the following system of linear equations

2𝑥 + 3𝑦 − 𝑧 = 1
3𝑥 − 4𝑦 + 3𝑧 = −1
2𝑥 − 𝑦 + 2𝑧 = −3
3𝑥 + 𝑦 − 2𝑧 = 4
Ans. Inconsistent
Q.6. Test the consistency of the following system and if consistent, solve it:

𝑥 + 2𝑦 − 𝑧 = 3, 3𝑥 − 𝑦 + 2𝑧 = 1, 2𝑥 − 2𝑦 + 3𝑧 = 2, 𝑥 − 𝑦 + 𝑧 = −1.
Ans. Consistent, unique solution. 𝑥 = −1, 𝑦 = 4, 𝑧 = 4.

Q.7. Solve the homogenous system of equations:

4𝑥 + 3𝑦 − 𝑧 = 0, 3𝑥 + 4𝑦 + 𝑧 = 0, 𝑥 − 𝑦 − 2𝑧 = 0, 5𝑥 + 𝑦 − 4𝑧 = 0.
Ans. 𝑥 = 𝑘, 𝑦 = −𝑘, 𝑧 = 𝑘.

Q.8. Determine 𝜆 and 𝜇 such that the equations 𝑥 + 𝑦 + 𝑧 = 6, 𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 3𝑧 = 10,

𝑥 + 2𝑦 + 𝜆 𝑧 = 𝜇
have

(i) no solution (ii) a unique solution (iii) infinite number of solutions.

Ans. (i). For no solution 𝜆 = 3, 𝜇 ≠ 10

(ii). For unique solution 𝜆 ≠ 3 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝜇 𝑐𝑎𝑛 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑎𝑛𝑦 𝑣𝑎𝑙𝑢𝑒

(iii). For infinitely many solutions 𝜆 = 3, 𝜇 = 10.

Q.9. Solve the following system of linear equations:

3𝑥 + 4𝑦 − 𝑧 − 6𝑡 = 0,
2𝑥 + 3𝑦 + 2𝑧 − 3𝑡 = 0
2𝑥 + 𝑦 − 14𝑧 − 9𝑡 = 0
𝑥 + 3𝑦 + 13𝑧 + 3𝑡 = 0.
Ans. 𝑥 = 11𝑘1 + 6𝑘2 , 𝑦 = −8𝑘1 − 3𝑘2 , 𝑧 = 𝑘1 , 𝑡 = 𝑘2 , where 𝑘1 , 𝑘2 are arbitrary constants

Q.10. Find the values of λ for which the following system of equations has non-trivial solutions:
(λ − 1)𝑥 + (3𝜆 + 1)𝑦 + 2𝜆𝑧 = 0,
(𝜆 − 1)𝑥 + (4𝜆 − 2)𝑦 + (𝜆 + 3)𝑧 = 0,
2𝑥 + (3𝜆 + 1)𝑦 + 3(𝜆 − 1)𝑧 = 0.
Ans. 𝜆 = 0, 3
