Comprehension and Analysis:
1. I think Brian is a tough and resilient kid with some fight in him, and I think these qualities will serve him well as
he tries to survive in the wilderness. On page 51, the text reads, “I have to get motivated, he thought,
remembering Perpich. Right now I’m all I’ve got. I have to do something.” (Answers may vary.)
2. Brian has some money, nail clippers, random bits of paper, his belt, his hatchet, his shoes, his clothing, and his
watch. I think the hatchet will be most useful to him, because he can use it as a weapon, and also to chop wood
to build stuff. (Answers may vary.)
3. Brian is reminded of Perpich, one of his teachers, which inspires Brian to think positively. He takes stock of what
he has, and he also remembers that he himself is his most valuable asset. A negative thought he has is that
because the plane had flown so far off course, it might be a long long time before he is found. (Answer may
vary.)
4. Brian wakes up feeling miserable and unbelievably thirsty. After he drinks water, he has trouble forming
thoughts, so he tries to work through some of his confusion. Then, he tries to remain positive, but negative
thoughts crowd in, causing him to worry that he won’t be rescued for a long time. Next, he pep talks himself to
get motivated, and then he feels satisfied when he is able to build a lean-to and find some berries to eat.
