Sa Ugoy ng Duyan Ang Pasko ay Sumapit Bayan Ko
Pandanggo ni Neneng Kailangan Kita Saan Ka Man Naroroon
Bato sa Buhangin Maalala mo kaya Bituing Marikit
What’s New
Originally, it was written as a poem by Jose Corazon de Jesus in 1929, and set
to music by Constancio de Guzman. Written as a protest song during the American
occupation of the Philippines, it is often sung in protest rallies and demonstrations
throughout Philippine history.
Bayan Ko
Ang bayan kong Pilipinas
Lupain ng ginto't bulaklak
Pag-ibig na sa kanyang palad Nag-
alay ng ganda't dilag
At sa kanyang yumi at ganda
Dayuhan ay nahalina
Bayan ko, binihag ka
Nasadlak sa dusa
Ibon mang may layang lumipad
Kulungin mo at umiiyak
Bayan pa kayang sakdal-dilag

known song composers and the lyricists such as Levi Celerio, Constancio de
Guzman, Mike Velarde Jr., Ernani Cuenco, Restie Umali, George Canseco, Angel
Peña, Leopoldo Silos Sr. and Santiago Suarez. Together, they produced a
memorable output of traditional Filipino love songs, music for movies, and materials
for contemporary arrangements and concert repertoire.

Suarez’s compositions are a mixture of the soulful Kundiman style and the lively
strains of the countryside.

Some of his works are quite popular and are heard even among today’s classical pop
singers, as well as choral groups. These includes the following Ligaya ko, Pandanggo
ni Neneng, Dungawin mo Hirang, Bakya Mo Neneng, Harana and many more. Suarez
passed away in 1964.
Among Umali’s most popular songs are Saan ka man Naroroon, Alaala ng
Lumipas, Ang Pangarap ko’y Ikaw, and Paano kita Lilimutin. He passed away in 1998.
ANGEL M. PEÑA
(1921-2014)
Angel Matias Peña was a classical and jazz composer, arranger, and bass
player. He was widely considered by modern Filipino jazz musicians as “one of the
founders of traditional jazz in the Philippines”.
He was born on April 22, 1921 to a family of musicians. He
wrote his first original jazz composition just before World War
II began and also wrote Kundiman for the young women he
would be courting.
