ACTIVITY 1: TONE IN INTERACTION

1. Choose a topic of mutual interest or relevance. It could be something light-hearted like

favourite movies, hobbies, or something more serious like current events, societal

issues, etc.

2. Discuss with your partner the various tones you could employ to discuss the chosen

topic. It could be formal, informal, playful, serious, sarcastic, empathetic, etc. Agree

on a tone that both of you are comfortable with and that you believe will effectively

convey your message.

3. Collaboratively write a script for your interaction. Ensure it includes elements of

dialogue, exchange of ideas, and reflects the chosen tone. Divide the dialogue into parts,

allocating lines to each participant.

4. Write down a brief explanation of why you chose the particular tone for your

discussion. Outline factors such as audience, context, and the message you want to

convey. Mention words/phrases that signal this tone. Reflect on how tone influences

perception and reception of the dialogue.

5. Rehearse your script together, paying close attention to maintaining the chosen tone

throughout the interaction.

When performing in front of the class, focus on delivery, body language, and facial

expressions to enhance the impact of the chosen tone and dialogue as a whole.
